  [SOLVED] Expanding LL partition
Posted by: saturnfreeway - 09-21-2014, 05:00 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (3)

Dear LL community,

Have been using LL for quite some time now and loving it. My old Toshiba Satellite is very happy too.

I'm dual-booting LL and WinXP. I'd like to give LL more breathing space. Currently I've got a partition sda2 formatted ntfs and dedicated WinXP, it only contains files and I'd like to incorporate it into LL. How do I do that? WinXP lives on sda1.

Any help would be very appreciated, thx

  Choppy video-sound
Posted by: alex1984 - 09-21-2014, 04:35 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (15)

Hi guys Smile

This is my very first attempt at any Linux based OS, and I have to say that I really like it.

I am using an old Acer Aspire One ao751h and the OS looks good and runs quick.

However, I got one issue:

I am trying to watch youtube videos on firefox and they are slightly choppy but watchable (unless in fullscreen, that lags badly), but sound skips alot, making the experience terrible.

Any idea on how this could be fixed?
Please, I am really ignorant in Linux, I can barely use the Terminal and I have no idea on how to fix this.

  Real tree view in folders?
Posted by: Monkeyman - 09-21-2014, 12:41 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

Probably just missing a check mark somewhere but I can't find it.

I have multiple HDDs and each one has multiple folders and sub folders.  I'd like to be able to see each of the folders/sub folders in the tree view (on the left side bar).  I can see all the HDDs.  What do I need to do to see them?

Dual booting windows 7 with LL2 (sda) with a shared DATA partition (on sdb)
Posted by: m654321 - 09-20-2014, 04:26 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Hi gold_finger.
Previously you gave me very clear & helpful guidance on how to create a shared DATA partition with two or more distros, including LL2, and then finally binding this partition to the Documents, Downloads, Videos etc. in 'home' in each distro. This is working very well.

I now want to share a DATA partition (on sdb with swap partition), but this time shared between windows 7 and LL2 (both OSes on sda). Like you, I don't have separate /home partitions.  Though I can bind LL2.0 without any problem, I'm unsure how to bind Win 7.  Do I bind Win 7, while logged in to LL2, as I did for the LL2 binding, or do I bind Win 7 while logged in Win 7.

Many thanks for your advice.

  Backup software for LL2
Posted by: m654321 - 09-20-2014, 04:15 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (28)

I want to be prudent and back up my LL2 onto an external drive, in case of an accident...  What open-source software would any of you suggest for this?

Your ideas are much appreciated.

  simple sound recorder software?
Posted by: m654321 - 09-20-2014, 04:13 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

What software can I use for a simple sound recorder with LL2, so that I can record ambient sound via my laptop's inbuilt microphone?
There is the linux software gnome-sound-recorder 3.4.0, though I suspect it wont run on LL2 as an XFCE rather than a Gnome desktop.

Many thanks in advance for any ideas?

Regards
Mike

  Hard drive SMART data
Posted by: Richard B - 09-20-2014, 03:43 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (2)

Can anyone please tell me how I can check the SMART (self test) data on a hard drive with Linux Lite? Lubuntu has a disk utility (possibly called Palimpsest) which does this, as well as being a quick method of checking partitions. It (or something similar) does not seem to be in the standard LL repositories and I can't find any reference in Help. I am probably missing something!

[Solved] Dell Latitude C640 booting issue
Posted by: ohjrson - 09-20-2014, 04:35 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (13)

OK, This is what I did. The Dell in question is the same one that I had the wireless issue.
Now I have tried to update it to Beryl. I tried using the live cd but then realized it is only a dvd-rom. So, I created a live DVD and the laptop booted up from there. I installed the OS on the drive and right at the end of the installer it says that the installer crashed. It would not shut down unless I clicked on shutdown. Then it hangs or something and I have to hold power button for 5 sec.

When I try to boot up the machine it does nothing. What have I done.?
Even if I hit F12 and select the HDD it still will not boot. I have even tried to boot from the grub screen with boot internal hdd, I see booting from local disk and a courser (<--spelling) below that, but that is it. What have I done or what can I do now?

Many thanks.
Ohjrson
