  Errors while trying to install
Posted by: Ravens - 11-02-2014, 12:37 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

So, after burning a CD and getting Linux Lite up and running on my Asus eee something I wanted to install, and started.
I chose the option Erase disk and install Linux

This was followed by ceveral errors, and I haven\t got a clue on how to solve any of them.

After this it just sends me back to the step where I can choose between erasing the disk and installing, or something else.

No, I'm not really good at computer-stuff in general (as you can probably tell by my wording, I've got no clue), I'm just hoping someone is able to help me, I'd like to get this computer up and running again, works great when running from the disc, but that won't really work in the long run.

  [SOLVED]Installing Updates
Posted by: Kalifornia - 11-01-2014, 08:20 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (22)

After successfully installing LL last night, I installed updates. Upon wakening and booting up, I lost my Wi-Fi, of course. It's a Linux thing. I knew I shouldn't have updated because that usually causes something to break. Smile

My question is this, after reinstalling LL because I couldn't get the Wi-Fi to work after trying many things I found online, what updates should I do to keep from breaking this Broadcom Wi-Fi? Should I even update LL at all? I can't connect this laptop to Ethernet, so a wired connection is out of the question.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it... is that the best thing to do here, or is there a way to update only the necessary things without killing my Wi-Fi? I appreciate any feedback you guys have here.

Thanks!

Browser choice in Linux Lite 2.2
Posted by: valtam - 11-01-2014, 12:50 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (70)

Web browser user preference these days seems to be split between Firefox and Chrome. In the next version of Linux Lite I'd like to give people a choice from the get-go about what browser they would want to install and use. There are several reasons for this:

1. Freedom of choice
2. I am out of ways to make Linux Lite fit on a CD, 2.2 is now DVD size. Having no web browsers installed allows us to still fit on CD thus taking care of our cd-rom only people.
3. Misko's 'Set default web browser' application can now be incorporated, a very useful tool that can be integrated into a new tool I am calling 'Web Browser Configuration' which will reside in Menu, Internet.
4. Objectively speaking, Chrome seems to be leading the way with web standards and web application compatibility, Youtube and Netflix are a good example of this.

There is another part to this. With no web browser installed by default, the Help Manual is left at the top of the Menu without a browser installed to utilize. This is solved with the following resolution - a standalone browser.

The code is small, a web browser that is 29kb in size! It is a port of a project from the PClinuxOS community I'm calling 'Lite Browser'. This web browser was ported for LL to use strictly with the Help Manual although it is quite a capable web browser in itself (not capable of showing videos like youtube etc). It is lightweight and very fast launching in a snap with tabs, zoom, backwards, forwards, search, reload and homepage buttons. Requires one small dependency: sudo apt-get install python-webkit Code here - https://dfgkh547-jsdfv8.iyhkj.tk/files/lite-webbrowser.py launch in a terminal with: python lite-webbrowser.py (make sure it is executable first)

I'd like your feedback on this as it is a big move and I'm unaware of any other distro that currently gives this much choice with such an important piece of daily used software.

Thank you Smile

[Solved]PAE is disabled on this Pentium M
Posted by: Kalifornia - 10-31-2014, 03:30 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (8)

I'm trying to install LL from CD, but this PAE error comes up. I've looked online for information on it, but it goes over my noob head.

Can anyone help me figure out how to enable PAE? It says it's disabled by default. I'm installing it on a 2006 Dell Latitude 110L.

Thanks! If you need more info, I'll be glad to supply it.

Help me understand the way linux install programs
Posted by: dodo - 10-29-2014, 10:31 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

So i managed to uninstall old LibreOffice and installed new 4.3 following instructions on LibreOffice site.
I downloaded tar.gz file, extracted it into my "home" folder, inside it was another folder named "DEBS", i opened terminal there, run some commands and now i have LibreOffice 4.3 (which is great btw.)
-what bugs me is: "DEBS" folder is still there where i extracted it, what would happen if i deleted it?
i don't know if this folder is important because program is already installed?
Because if it isn't, i would gladly delete it to free 200 MB of disk space.
