Grateful user on year 2004 Laptop
Posted by: Lovelinuxlux - 02-11-2020, 07:58 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (2)

I have held onto a Toshiba Satellite A75 laptop (2004) as a kind of toy for testing out -- and playing around with -- lightweight Linux distros.

[Pentium 4 with about 1.4 GB RAM (upgraded from 512 MB); unit is 16 years old in 2020]

I have installed NOTHING other than Linux Lite and won't even bother with anything else.

I first installed Linux Lite 3.6 on this unit almost two years ago but did nothing much with it except to run updates every 8 months or so.

[Linux 4.x -- being 64-bit only --  is not an option. It is so great that Linux Lite 3.6 will be maintained until 2021]

I just want to say I am certain that Linux Lite is the perfect Linux distro for the above specs of this ancient dinosaur.

However, browser usage of this machine is quite <precarious> and finely balanced -- with almost no room for modification -- or else usability is wrecked.

When browsing, I keep JAVASCRIPT disabled -- and I only use Firefox on rare occasions.

==> The main-important-huge point I want to make is that it is *only* the MIDORI BROWSER (v.0.5.11 released August 30, 2015) that makes this unit "not-utterly-annoying" for browsing.

Specifically, the fans of this unit -- overstuffed with a Pentium 4 desktop chip -- REV UP up to LOUD Jetliner Turbo speeds on the slightest provocation when browsing to any webpage with multiple Javascript items running (ruining on?) the page...especially with Firefox.

==> The MIDORI BROWSER is my salvation, and makes this ancient unit running Linux Lite nicely useable.

Finally, just yesterday I activated zRam via "Lite Tweeks" -- and it made a *clearly* perceptible and satisfying difference in speed and responsiveness [!!]

Thank you Jerry and Linux Lite!

  RAM speed
Posted by: kelrin - 02-11-2020, 04:08 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

I am thinking to upgrade my RAM.

Here is what Linux tells about my current module:

Handle 0x003C, DMI type 17, 40 bytes
Memory Device
  Array Handle: 0x003A
  Error Information Handle: Not Provided
  Total Width: 64 bits
  Data Width: 64 bits
  Size: 8192 MB
  Form Factor: SODIMM
  Set: None
  Locator: DIMM B
  Bank Locator: BANK 2
  Type: DDR4
  Type Detail: Synchronous
  Speed: 2400 MT/s
  Manufacturer: Micron
  Serial Number: 128BADF8
  Asset Tag: 0F161800
  Part Number: 8ATF1G64HZ-2G3B1
  Rank: 1
  Configured Clock Speed: 2133 MT/s
  Minimum Voltage: 1.2 V
  Maximum Voltage: 1.2 V
  Configured Voltage: 1.2 V

Why does "speed" and "configured clock Liteblue speed" differ?

Does Linux Lite have support for this? If so, are there any instructions that are easy to follow?

Thanks

Posted by: Ankit Dixit - 02-11-2020, 09:19 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

Hello Everyone, I am new in this community and I am learning mongodb. I have some queries related to clustering and its application, I am in beginner's face so currently, I want to clear my basic on mongodb. Can anyone tell mongodb stores the information in rather an unstructured format as compared to structured tables like in MySQL or PostgreSQL?

Upgrade from LL4.4 to 4.8 does not work
Posted by: eikelein - 02-10-2020, 05:28 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

Hi;relatively new to Linux but an  "old dog" with MS PCs.
I attempt to upgrade from what is supposed to be LL 4.4 to 4.8. Here is what System Info tells me:
SummaryComputer

ProcessorAMD A8-3820 APU with Radeon™ HD Graphics

Memory11765MB (1000MB used)

Machine TypeDesktop

Operating SystemLinux Lite 4.4

User Name        .....

Date/TimeMon 10 Feb 2020 11:27:06 AM CST

Attached is the log of the failing update.
Lite Upgrade laconically tells me "You are already running the latest release." Since that tool {Upgrade} seems to be for ugrades to other series like 5 it may be correct.

But how do I get to 4.8 without a completely new install?

Any helpful tips are highly appreciated.
TIA Eike

  Failed to run Pinta
Posted by: Nyto - 02-09-2020, 07:43 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (14)

Good morning.
Today I needed to use Pinta so I installed it from the LiteSoftware screen and when I tried to run it, it took 2 or 3 seconds, then rapidly showed an EMPTY window frame and then nothing. Nothing shows as open on the panel, either.

Rebooted and tried it again to no avail.

Completely uninstalled Pinta and then reinstalled it from somewhere else, but with the same results. This was repeated twice from different places.  It never showed any dependency problem.  The only version I was able to try is 1.6-2

This on a fresh LL installation, up-to-date.

I had never had any problem with Pinta, ever.  Does anybody have a clue?

Thank you.

<------- PS: All of my computer's data is here on the left column.
