  Early Alpha Speed Test 1
Posted by: valtam - 02-21-2020, 06:55 AM - Forum: Linux Lite Software Development - Replies (15)

Very, very early testing of 5.0 on real hardware. Boot up is fast, shutdown is almost instant. Windows pop open very quickly, look at Libre Word open!
Fairly old HP lappy with 8gb ram, Core i7, very old first gen Vertex 60gb SSD. Can't wait to test this on modern hardware!

  El ordenador va a tirones
Posted by: Guillermo J - 02-20-2020, 05:51 PM - Forum: Video Cards - No Replies

Pd: Ya he probado a cambiar a drivers privativos y sigue sin funcionar.

  Instaled LL 4.8 on a Corsair flash voyager GT USB3.0 64Bg - poor performance
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 02-19-2020, 04:09 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

I recently committed to make myself an ultra portable "computer" - so I installed LL 4.8 onto this USB thumb drive.
I choose to encrypt the whole drive when running the installer, and I also disabled the internal drive on the laptop (ensure that the boot loader got to the thumb drive).

And that worked just nice. LL works and I can do everything I would do on any computers.

However, there is one problem - The performance. I was fully  aware that this may becoming an issue, so I was expecting some performance drop compared to a HDD.
But - the performance hit running on this USB device was much greater than I had anticipated, e.g. I need to wait about 2-3 minutes for the computer to turn off. And about ever single task seems bounded with a delay time for several seconds.

Therefore i ask if there is configurations I can change to make LL run "faster" when installed on a USB thumb drive ?

  Color Me Impressed
Posted by: mbott - 02-19-2020, 02:12 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (6)

I've been a Linux user since 2007.  First with Ubuntu and for the last 3+ years Linux Mint.  This week I was gifted 2 old desktop systems. One started out as a WinXP box and it was beyond rescue. Max'd out at 1GB memory, 160GB HD and an intermittent fault somewhere.

The second was a Win7 emachine. AMD64 dual core, 4GB memory, about 9 usb ports, memory card reader and DVD drive in a nice, compact desktop form.  Linux Mint XFCE was tried and I was getting intermittent video issues.  System would lock up and I'd end up with a screen slewed diagonally.  Install Linux Lite and it is just works.  Great little box for its intended use in the basement workshop.  I upgraded the HD to 1TB to handle my music collection.

  More of a pre installing question - DBAN Vs USB
Posted by: TheDead - 02-19-2020, 12:08 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (10)

Hi,
I have quite a few computers I received recently but need to securely wipe the hard drives before installing linux on them.It's been two days trying to download the DBAN ISO and put on USB keys (3 different models).
Etcher and unetbootin say the downloaded (re-downloaded, etc.) ISO is not bootable and another program says nothing when creating the USB key but wont boot either.

All USB keys say that indeed, the computer has No Operating system found when (remove the harddrive to test since otherwise, it boots the old OS).
PS : Computers are not UEFI and are quite "Legacy" since the CPU is not even 64bits (old Core Duo) Wink

Any hints to get DBan working/booting?

  Mouse Acceleration/Sens... adjustments in Mouse/Touchpad have no effect on mouse
Posted by: ADI8421 - 02-17-2020, 09:06 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Hi, I've just installed Linux Lite on an internal SSD (Swapped out the DVD drive). Win7 is on the original HDD of Compaq Presario CQ57 laptop.

Mouse Acceleration/Sensitivity adjustments in Settings -Mouse/Touchpad have no effect on the either external wireless mouse or the laptop's own touchpad. All other settings ie. Reverse Scroll direction, left handed, right handed etc do work OK and are saved OK and remain on reboot. Accel/Sens changes have absolutely no effect on hardware. The slider settings of both are saved on exit too.

Is there a solution at all ?

Many thanks.

  clamav and freshclam not working
Posted by: Rolisican Idol - 02-16-2020, 07:50 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I recently switched to Linux Lite because of Windows 7 expiring. This week after I installed clamav, scans wouldn't work.
First I ran from terminal:
sudo apt-get install clamav clamav-daemon
(clamtk was on the end of that line I copied, but it was said not to work well with Linux Lite)

I had used clamav before on a machine with Ubuntu 12.04, where i'd enter "clamscan -r /" Trying it on this PC, I'd get:
LibClamAV Error: cli_loaddbdir(): No supported database files found in /var/lib/clamav
ERROR: Can't open file or directory
    With 0 files scanned

I uninstalled everything I saw and reinstalled clamav, but not clamav-daemon. Then I ran freshclam manually, ending up with this:
Sat Feb 15 13:18:20 2020 -> daily database available for download (remote version: 25724)
Sat Feb 15 13:18:50 2020 -> ERROR: Download failed (28) Sat Feb 15 13:18:50 2020 -> ERROR:  Message: Timeout was reached

Sat Feb 15 13:18:50 2020 -> ERROR: Database update process failed: Connection failed (5)
Sat Feb 15 13:18:50 2020 -> ERROR: Update failed.
Sat Feb 15 13:18:50 2020 -> --------------------------------------
Sat Feb 15 14:09:08 2020 -> Update process terminated

Please suggest what else I should show in order to get an answer to my problem.

  User "linuxlite"
Posted by: genericman - 02-16-2020, 03:31 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - No Replies

Hi all,

I have a new 4.8 install and probably 2 out of 10 experience with linux distrobutions in general. Everything seems to be working properly but I do have one question. There is a user (maybe a generic root user?) "linuxlite" that is the default when I restart. I can't find reference to it anywhere else (e.g., under users). There is a "root" user and the other one that I created. I'd like to change the default user if possible. Thanks!
