  Congratulations on your distro
Posted by: darknetmatrix - 08-20-2020, 09:04 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

I don't know why linux Lite is always associated as a beginner's distro. On my workstation I run Solus os on my other workstation Arco linux both rolling releases, one more stable than the other but that's a different discussion.
Since tonight I have installed linux lite on an older dell-inspiron laptop and for me this is a very workable system and indeed if you come across from windows you will feel right at home in it but the advanced user can really appreciate this system. But when are you an advanced user by the way?
The Windows 10 version that was on it had probably received 6 GB updates in recent months and was no longer workable for daily use, despite plugging in an SSD.
With the installation of linux Lite 5, this laptop can again stand its ground.
Nothing but credit to the developer and his team, linux Lite is what Xubuntu should be.

What are some MUST HAVE Linux programs/software you MUST have on a fresh install
Posted by: davidP7 - 08-20-2020, 08:31 AM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

Hello everyone,

I've recently started using POP OS! on my laptop and liking it so far. I know whenever I install a fresh windows pc I have certain programs I need or atleast want to have on it before I can start using it like I want. Since I'm new to Linux I don't have this knowledge yet on some easy to use or must have things. Everything is appreciated, I like learning new stuff but some things I am looking for:

- printscreen program where I can easily take a SS of a part of the window and edit it. I tried Flameshot but it kinda bugs out on me.

- Music/Video Player with subtitle support.

- Easy file manager, something in the line of windirstat where you can easily see what is hogging all my harddrive space.

-Remote desktop Client, something I can use RDP files with, I use Remmina now, but I would like some other alternatives if there are ones.

-Any Linux exclusive games that look like dwarf fortress Big Grin

-Anything else you find usefull in your daily use of Linux

  How Do I delete/Clean Syslog?
Posted by: bigskill - 08-19-2020, 10:08 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

I have x32 LL installed, fresh install 3mos ago.I have been losing hard drive space.
I finally found where it went, SYSLOG is 42GB in size.  ./var/log/syslog
This is on a 70gb drive.
How do I delete or clean this?  It will not let me by normal means.
Is it safe to just delete it? HOW?
Can it be cleaned/recovered?
How can I stop this from happening?
I tried Bleachbit, but I do not see an option for syslog.
Help Please
TIA

  USB failed to mount
Posted by: JKey - 08-18-2020, 08:15 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (1)

hi everybody,
a little problem with the potential to grow. I am away from home for some time and brought my little laptop with lite 5 installed. It is an HP laptop with only a 32gig ssd so I use USBs for storage and work. It was fine until I just came back and get the message;

failed to mount " WORK"
Not authorized to perform operation (polkit authority not available and caller is not uid 0)

when I tried to open the stick.
Today there was an update which needed a reboot and I used Stacer, that`s it. Can somebody please advise?

  Oddity Occuring
Posted by: lc6529 - 08-18-2020, 03:15 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

I added a UPS to my system last week and had been seeing the UPS in my task bar on the right side and when I pulled up power management settings it would show the UPS state.

Since that time I have not added software other than the updates that are pushed and today the UPS has started disappearing from the taskbar.  It is there when I boot into my session, I can see the charge state and then the ICON disappears.

It also disappears from the devices listed in Power Manager.  I checked the USB cable, plugged and re-plugged it and all seems good.

I then put the cable in another USB port, it appeared in the power manager, I was able to view it.  I closed power manager and it disappeared again.

Any suggestions as to how to get it back?

  Kernel Install
Posted by: UglyStuff - 08-18-2020, 02:11 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

Shamelessly piggy-backing on this topic, I wonder if it's possible to upgrade the kernel to a newer version than the 4.4.0-189-generic "hostnamectl | grep Kernel" returns in terminal for my 32-bit Lite 3.8?

Sadly, my age and my computer's age are getting on. So I wave goodbye. I enjoyed much of the banter and the education I received here. I hope I hurt no feelings, and I wish all of you a long covid-free life. You have been most friendly through some tough times!

AppleTouch on Early 2006 MacBook Pro and Lite 3.8: Customize tap zones?
Posted by: UglyStuff - 08-18-2020, 11:37 AM - Forum: Other - No Replies

Hi everyone,

I've installed Lite 3.8 (32-bit) on my Early 2006 MacBook Pro (CPU is CoreDuo, hence the 32-bit install), and I'd like to customize my touchpad (AppleTouch), like I did in OS X thanks to a gem of an app (not free, but worth every penny) called SideTrack, that lets me do one-finger scrolling (ditto Lite, out of the box, thank you guys!), but also lets me decide what happens when I tap in each corner of the touchpad.

For example, in OS X Snow Leopard (I dual-boot the two OSes), tapping in the upper left corner performs a middle-click, tapping in the bottom left goes one page back in my Web browser, when tapping in the bottom right goes one page forward, and tapping in the upper right corner performs a right-click (you can do that in Lite too in the bottom right corner, another one for the good guys, because two-finger right-click is a royal pain in the rear, you ask me).

So, to end your suffering at reading this post, is there a way, via a setting or third-party, to do in Lite what I can do in OS X with my touchpad/AppleTouch?

  Sound Fault newish Sony Tv
Posted by: slivo59 - 08-15-2020, 08:45 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (7)

i have Linux lite v3.4
used it on a Sony TV model KDL-42W705B made Feb 2015
using the hdmi port to connect sound and vision no problems
i tried using it on new Sony TV model KD-55XF7073 made September 2018
using the hdmi port to connect vision perfect, sound garbled sqeeky
used hdmi sound options

Thinking that the latest v5 would cure the faulty sound waited till it came

Have now installed duel boot Linux lite v5 using the Sony TV model KDL-42W705B
again used the hdmi port to connect sound and vision no problems
so tried using it on Sony TV model KD-55XF7073
using the hdmi port to connect vision perfect, sound again garbled sqeeky
used hdmi sound options

trashes the sound Linux lite v3.4 and v 5 sends out.

My thoughts are that Sony have altered the on board sound somehow between
tv models or maybe my new Sony TV model KD-55XF7073 is a runt and other models have no problems

By the way i also use Raspberry Pi 3 model B on
this Sony TV model KD-55XF7073
used the HDMI port to connect sound and vision no problems

to get by have ordered from Ebay a
HDMI to 3 RCA CVBS Full HD Video 1080P AV Scart Composite Converter Adapter
hopefully this should circumvent the incompatibility problem till a suitable fix comes
