Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NOSPLIT': error message several weeks
Posted by: Michele - 08-05-2021, 09:52 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (8)

A year ago I had a friend install Linux Lite for me in an Oracle Virtual Box. I have been very satisfied with how it works according to what I need. Once a week I routinely install all the needed updates, but the past 3 or 4 weeks it has not been working. It gives instead a sort of error log, in which the line maybe most relevant is:

«Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)»

As I remember I did not modify anything in the setup. I have tried with different "Lite Repository Mirrors", but that did not help.

I am not an advanced Linux user. Do I now have to do a special authentication to update? Where? Thank you.

I set an invalid display resolution and I can't figure out how to change it back
Posted by: iBrokeMyLinux - 08-05-2021, 03:19 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I can't boot into my desktop anymore because my monitor trips out as soon as it loads my desktop. Login screen is fine, just the desktop has a bad resolution set.

I can't figure out for the life of me how to change the resolution back from a recovery terminal. I see xorg.conf isn't really a thing anymore. I can't find any information on the replacement anywhere either, which is weird. I must be using some really wrong keywords.

Well I did find a link telling me to delete "~/.config/monitors.xml" but that doesn't exist in Linux Lite.

tl;dr: Please PLEASE how do I reset the display resolution??? It's 100% broken, monitor flickers with a distorted display please help

Some questions for Virtual Box users
Posted by: trinidad - 08-03-2021, 03:21 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

I do not use VB and I am curious as to how difficult it may be to use SSH to display a running Vbox system remotely, and to configure SFTP between its host and the remote system it is displayed on. With gnome boxes I can display a running OS in gnome boxes remotely using SSH X11 forwarding and SFTP to both the host and the remote system it is displayed on from the OS running in gnome boxes and use remmina and/or Thunar bookmarks. File transfer is a breeze, and the whole thing is easy to set up and gives me SFTP between all three systems. Is SSH easily configurable for such a setup in Vbox? With gnome boxes it's a breeze.

My setup is a Debian 10.9 host with gnome boxes, spice tools, and open SSH client and server ( I can SSH both directions) installed. In boxes I run either Linux Lite 5.x or Bunsen Labs. From my permanent LL 5.x desktop with open SSH client and server installed I can SSH X11 forward gnome boxes to my desktop display there and move files back and forth between the two allowing me to experiment with the virtualized LL 5.x system without harming my permanent installation of Linux Lite, all the while using the CPU power and RAM of my host system and being able to transfer files back and forth from my host as well. This is quite a convenience. I just wonder how difficult this would be to achieve with Vbox?

  New To Linux, Installation Problem
Posted by: bungelow_ed - 08-03-2021, 12:06 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (8)

Hello,
I have been a Windows users since Windows 386, yeah I am old.  After reading a glowing recommendation of Linux Lite as a replacement for Windows I decided to take the plunge.

Anyway, just tried to install Linux Lite on a Windows PC as a dual boot.  Installation seemed to go fine but on reboot I am presented with a prompt for GNU GRUB ver. 2.04 and do not know how to move forward.  Any insights, suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance for any help you can offer.

  Quite new to Linux
Posted by: musicismylife - 08-02-2021, 02:53 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (6)

Hello everyone.  I've been on Windows systems for 22 years.  I have never used any other operating systems at all.  Everything was going hunky dory on the various PC towers over the years with Windows.  No need to look elsewhere.

Then I bought a laptop which has proven to be frustrating and fairly useless at efficiently running the preinstalled Windows 10 it came with. Finally, after a million ridiculous freeze ups just doing the simplest tasks on this P.O.S. laptop (or trying to run more than one program or app at a time) instead of me smashing it into a million pieces, I somehow got the bright idea to try and find if such a thing existed as a less resource-intensive operating system that could maybe work more effortlessly on this garbage laptop.

And so I checked into the world of alternative operating systems and determined to give Linux a try. After some research, it seemed Linux Lite was recommended for Linux newbies like myself.  Since April I've been running Linux Lite on a persistent live USB I created myself.  I have some questions about using Linux Lite in this way and so here I am, joining this forum.  I'm still trying to find answers to my questions as it seems that, from reading all the forum guidelines and maybe a dozen threads, one needs to complete due diligence before starting a thread where said topic may already be covered.

VirtualBox Installation Host Screen Size problem
Posted by: bonnevie - 08-01-2021, 03:04 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Hello,
I'm stuck with a screen problem in Virtualbox:  the bottom part of the setup instructions in Host is hidden and I can't move the panel around to unhide it. I should see buttons like  "Continue" or "Cancel". Because it's [below the screen], I can't move on. It looks like this:

(OVF file was removed before posting)

VB was downloaded from Light Software. My max screen resolution is 1366X768. Lowering screen rez is only giving me the same truncated VB image (with black margins) and I still can't move it around. I know these buttons are down there, so it's kind of frustrating!
I welcome any suggestion to get a full screen.

  upgrade path from 3.6 ?
Posted by: hughparker1 - 07-31-2021, 11:27 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

I would like to upgrade to the latest version of Linux Lite 5.4
I remember a while ago, that someone said that there is no upgrade path from my current version 3.6.  I that still the case?

If I need to do a clean install, is there a way to keep my free Dropbox installation without having to reinstall Dropbox, as I would need to upgrade my Dropbox account.  I currently only have a free basic Dropbox account which means I can I can only sign into max of three devices at a time (new rules introduced 2019).

Unfortunately I don't have home on a separate partition.  So I believe that is a major problem.  I just wondered is there a workaround to avoid new Dropbox installation?

LL 5.4 Hibernate won't come back
Posted by: freewind - 07-30-2021, 03:11 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hi there,

I have fresh installed LL 5.4 on a Dell T3600(UEFI disabled) with success.
By testing some functions I find out that Hibernate  (sudo pm-hibernate) work well (save pages to swap partition, power-off)
and on Power-On it reads the pages back (can see on screen) (resume: image successfully loaded) but then nothing happens. No further boot, no Alt-F1-F6 worked. Only power down to reboot normal.

If I use the Hibernation button in Menu it is nothing to see (only the wait time for network interface to come down) and system power off.
On power back the system normal boots.

Any help is welcome.

THX Frank

1 1/2 minutes boot time HELP!
Posted by: kat - 07-29-2021, 04:48 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (6)

Hi, guys,  I put linux lite 20.04 on my husband's older Dell desktop, 64 bit, 4G RAM, with intel graphics. Linux lite works well but boots terribly slow, 1 1/2 minutes. I put it on my other older HP desktop, 64 bit, 8G RAM, with intel graphics, same long boot times. I had to put windows 10 back on the desktops because of such slow boot times. Windows 10 takes only 30 seconds to boot. I really like how Linux Lite runs on the desktops once they're booted. I can see that most of the time booting is spent with networking and bluetooth. Isn't there some fix for this? I can't find anything online that works! I have linux lite clean installed on a Chromebook, 4G RAM, as its only OS. The Chromebook has only 16G disk space. It boots up great, 14 seconds. What's the problem with those desktops that they boot sooooo slow with Linux? *Would a swap partition in the right place help? I noticed the newest Linux Lite doesn't have a swap partition.
*Yesterday, I put Linux Lite along side Windows 10 (dual boot) on a three year old Hp laptop with 12G RAM, not very old. Linux did a little over a whole minute boot time, not that bad, but not that good either. systemd-analyze blame says that most of it is networking and bluetooth. Is there a way to fix this?
