Hello new LL 5.6 user here. Trying to switch from Lubuntu to Linux lite for our image we use for company PCs. It is really working very well on our older hardware, but I am running into issues when creating a master image to put on the other hardware and I am not sure where to post my questions. Here are the issues I am running into and if you tell me where to post for help that would be much appreciated.
I set the desktop background to a custom jpg and then create a new image file. Install this image onto another piece of hardware, but the desktop background reverts back to the original Linux-Lite-Wave-and-Rounds-Gradient-Blues-1080p.png. Funny thing is at the login screen it has the correct background, but as soon as I log in with our user it changes the background image.
Another issue I seem to be having is that the screensaver/enable lock screen doesn't seem to be working. It works on the original hardware, but when I put this image on another computer it doesn't seem to lock when it should I did just find another post about a similar issue and will try changing the display blank after minutes to larger than the screensaver timeout.
Thanks,
TBO

Hello Friends,
I'm new to Linux Lite. I read some old posts about virtual keyboards but couldn't find what I wanted. On a Mac or on Ubuntu, one can set virtual keyboards : type with a Spanish layout even if your keyboard is a US QWERTY.
I found the keyboard settings menu, added Spanish but now how do I switch btw native and virtual ?
1. on Mac or Ubuntu I'm used to a little icon (like on Ubuntu or Mac) to switch
2. on Mac or Ubuntu there is a key combination to switch
Any way to do 1 or 2 or both on Linux Lite ?
Thanks
P

Hello there,
On an old laptop, I recently downloaded and installed Linux Lite. It formerly ran two versions of Peppermi t, but one of them has recently been replaced by Linux Lite.
I'm excited to learn more about the system and will undoubtedly have questions.
Regards,
Zunairah

Hi, I'd never used a Linux operating system before. But I'm sick of Microsoft pushing you to update your operating system every few years and forcing you to use software like Edge instead of Firefox (Who wants Edge instead of Firefox?!). Why? ), their bloated, sluggish "enhanced" image viewing software, and so on.
I'm not going to 'upgrade.' Windows 7 is still my operating system.
I installed Ubuntu Touch on a phone and bought a new (old) laptop to convert to Linux. (I'd prefer to maintain Windows 7 on this computer so that I can keep utilising applications and games.)
I'm really contemplating Linux Lite since I'm looking for something quick and easy. Mostly for browsing the internet and creating novels.
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X131e laptop.
Here are the specifications:
AMD Radeon HD 5000 GPU Processor: 2.80 GHz RAM: 8 GB
320 GB SSD hard drive
Is Linux Lite a suitable fit for you?

Release Announcement
Linux Lite 5.8 Final is now available for download and installation. This release includes updates to the Help Manual - our extensive, easy to follow Linux Lite guide, Lite Widget has caught up with the latest Conky syntax, there's an updated Papirus icon theme, Neofetch has been included, we've added Mintstick to our Accessories, there are 9 new wallpapers, and a host of bug fixes and enhancements for our target audience. If you're coming from Windows, you'll find this to be a solid, stable release that will help make your transition to a linux based operating system, user friendly. If you're coming from another linux based OS, you'll come to understand that this lightweight OS is the feature complete desktop you've been searching for. We've been repeatedly described as underrated, here's your chance to find out why.

Changes:
Updated Papirus icon theme:

9 new Wallpapers of which 4 are from our resident artist [member=5059]whateverthing[/member]

Neofetch
I see a lot of reviewers and users in general using this tool to give a brief system summary. Since Linux Lite is supported by Neofetch, I thought it would be a convenient, simple touch to add without contributing anything to overhead. We've also submitted a Feature Request to Screenfetch to add us too.
![[Image: MH9QT9Y.png]](https://i.imgur.com/MH9QT9Y.png)
Lite Widget
Lite Widget has received a much needed syntax update. Based on Conky, the widget has been reprogrammed to adhere to the latest code format.
![[Image: 1Nm6xyF.png]](https://i.imgur.com/1Nm6xyF.png)
Mintstick
We've always included an easy to use DVD burner. With DVD's slowly becoming a thing of the past, the logical inclusion was to add a simple point and click USB Burner/Formatter, and it doesn't get much easier than Mintstick. Etcher is still available in Lite Software for those that prefer it. You can find Mintsick under Menu, Accessories, USB Image Writer and USB Stick Formatter.
![[Image: mjyl6Uw.png]](https://i.imgur.com/mjyl6Uw.png)

Plus many other tweaks and changes.
Window Theme: Adapta
Icon Theme: Papirus
Font: Roboto Regular
How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?
In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.
Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.
Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

Details:
Kernel: 5.4.0-96 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.16 )
Firefox: 96.0
Thunderbird: 91.5.0
LibreOffice: 6.4.7.2
VLC: 3.0.9.2
Gimp: 2.10.18
Base: 20.04.3
Known Issues:
No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Grub - press the ESC key whilst booting in UEFI mode after your BIOS has posted. Use the SHIFT key if running Linux Lite in Legacy mode.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. After you install Linux Lite, you can change Grub to show 'Linux Lite' via Lite Tweaks, Grub Menu Entry Edit.
Upgrading
There has been some tweaks to the Lite Upgrade code from Series 4.x. Most notably, the end dialogue has been simplified and will ask you to either Reboot, Shutdown or View Log. Continue Working is no longer viewed as a sensible option. Also, Lite Welcome will no longer be displayed after a Reboot. Just look at Lite Widget to see if you upgraded successfully to 5.8 or do:
in a Terminal, should return Linux Lite 5.8. Lastly, the upgrade log will now be stored in /var/log/lite-upgrade.log for those interested in the process. All of our code will function in the 'system space' and no longer in the 'user space'. Our overall improvements to Lite Upgrade should see people upgrading as quickly as ever with less bloat along with unnecessary dialogues and information.
> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates (you must reboot if asked to, otherwise continue to the next step)
> Set a Restore Point - Menu, System, Timeshift
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade
> Reboot
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not have Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade do:
Code: sudo apt-get install --reinstall lite-upgrade-series5
and, or:
Code: rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/lite-upgrade.desktop
then try Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade again.
Having problems upgrading? First thing to do is open a terminal, and make sure you have the latest version of Lite Upgrade.
Code: apt policy lite-upgrade-series5
should return:
Code: Installed: 5.0-0050-linuxlite
Candidate: 5.0-0050-linuxlite
If you've ran Install Updates and still don't have this version or greater you can either - wait 24 hours, or change to the default Linux Lite repository in Lite Sources.
Lite Upgrade - What it will do:
- New Lite Help Manual
- New Lite Upgrade
- New Lite Welcome
- New Lite Themes
- New Lite Widget
- New Wallpapers
- Updated Icons
- Add Neofetch
- Add Mintstick
If you don't want Neofetch or Mintstick after you've upgraded, then do either or both of:
Code: sudo apt-get remove neofetch
Code: sudo apt-get remove mintstick
Lite Upgrade - What it won't do:
- TBA

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware:
Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 4gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-5.8-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.
A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ or https://rufus.ie/
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.
If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)
Reviewers in a VirtualBox:
Installing Updates does not function with a Live ISO. All features work as they should, once you have installed Linux Lite to hardware or a VM.
Once Linux Lite has been installed, add the following for a complete reviewing experience:
Code: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11
Don't forget the Guest Additions too!
Also, get the Extensions pack from here - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image
Preferred Specs:
1.5GHz processor+
1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image
Login to the live desktop is automatic.
The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.
Linux Lite 6.0 Final Codename Fluorite will be released on 1st June, 2022.
Hints - New Window Manager Theme. New approach to delivering LibreOffice. New default Web Browser? Hopefully more accessibility tools. Still XFCE. Still ROCK SOLID!
Thank you
Jerry and the team.

- SCP would NOT transfer to remote hosts
- Would STOP at Welcome to Linux Lite 5.2 (GNU/Linux 5.4.0-96-generic x86_64)"
- Performed SCP -v option ; GENERATED ERROR "debug1: Exit status -1 ""
- From another pc running LL 5.2, opened .bashrc
- Noticed line 1 ===> [[ $- != *i* ]] && return <=== missing on 5.4 .bashrc
- added line in 5.4 .bashrc on line 1
- SCP working

Followed the guidance under "File Encryption" in LL Help Manual, and made a custom right click action in file manager to make encryption/decryption of files easy.
Commands used:
Encryption: x-terminal-emulator -t "Encrypt file..." -e "mcrypt %f"
Decryption: x-terminal-emulator -t "Decrypt file..." -e "mcrypt -d %f"
Can someone please advice which encryption algorithm is used in above?
