DNS and OpenVPN Access Server

I have my own OpenVPN Access Server. To install my OpenVPN client and connect to my Access Server, I follow the instructions at https://openvpn.net/index.php/access-ser...ients.html. When I have the server redirect internet browsing, so that the network my Access Server is connected to handles the browsing, I can ping IP addresses, but I cannot ping domain names or browse the internet. For example, I can ping the Google public DNS server 8.8.8.8, but I cannot ping or browse to www.google.com.
I put in a ticket with the folks at OpenVPN. They led me to my /etc/resolv.conf file, which shows my nameserver as 127.0.0.1. When I changed the nameserver to 8.8.8.8, I could ping ip addresses and domain names and browse the internet. Using www.ipchicken.com, my internet browsing appeared to be coming from the same public IP address as my OpenVPN Access Server. This was the result I was looking for. But after rebooting, the nameserver returned to 127.0.0.1.
As a workaround for this, I added 8.8.8.8 as an Additional DNS Server in my Network Connections. I have been able to use another Ubuntu Linux based distro without this workaround. And the folks at OpenVPN suggested there might be something special going on with the distro I'm using (Linux Lite 2.4 64 bit) that could be causing the /etc/resolv.conf file to use the local loopback address as my nameserver.
For the record, I have LL 2.4 64bit running on my laptop and my desktop, and the behavior connecting to my OpenVPN Access Server is the same. I have to add 8.8.8.8 to my Network Connections settings, as a workaround, in order to get the expected behavior.

Deploying LL with customized install disk

I have installed LL on three units in the past few weeks. Each time it gets a little easier as I learn the ropes.
But is it possible to compile a custom installation disk with the common programs, addons and settings that I want to place on each machine? For instance, I want WINE and a couple of Windows programs, I want the expanded gnome theme collection, a video editor, the slimjet browser, etc.

I would like to personally thank all of those who have supported the project up until now. Without your generous support, we could not have made it this far.
There is still so much to do, so much to improve on and so much to offer. Your donations to date have helped maintain our web presence, hosting, repo server, domain expenses, Bounty payments etc and the recent purchase of the Linux Lite Development Workstation.
At some point in the future, we may look at supporting UEFI. Although personally I am against this technology because of how it controls users, we do ourselves no favors by excluding a large part of the Windows population of whom we are trying to convert to Linux Lite. This year, I'd like to purchase a UEFI computer of which to start testing UEFI support for the future. UEFI is unlikely to be supported in Series 2 of LL, but cannot be ruled out in the future.
It's my hope that in the future we can pay people full time to work on Linux Lite, but that is some time off yet. It takes years to build a credible distro but to date, we are on the right track thanks to some good magazine and online reviews.
We now accepts Donations in 23 currencies. If you would like to support the project in recognition of all of our work to date, and to support the upcoming 2.6 release on September 1st, and future development please visit here - https://dfgkh547-jsdfv8.iyhkj.tk/donate.html#donate

Just converted a Dell 1545 from Vista x32 to LL 2.4 x32. Awesome result. Everything went smoothly. I had to install the Broadcom driver, everything else was stock. Added Wine and a few other progs. The owner is absolutely thrilled with the speed and stability - neither of which Vista had any acquaintance with.
I had struggled to make Vista work, but finally gave up. Not a bad OS, but MS abandoned it a long time ago and went on to "greener" pastures, leaving the field tech to try to clean up its messes.
I also decided I won't be upgrading my own tower to Win10, since I don't want to cede control of my computer to MS' mandatory automatic updates. I'll stick with 7 for the time being, but if it comes to it, I would have no compunction against converting to LL.

Thunar Options for Folders

Hello Folks,
I'm 100% new to Linux Lite and have been very happy over my first couple days of use! Great distro!
My question is this...I have been using Linux (almost all Ubuntu based distros) for a couple years but do not have much experience with XFCE or specifically, Thunar. Most of the other File Managers I've used have the option to show the item counts for folders in the home screen of the File Manager. Am I missing where to add this or is it not an option with Thunar and if not an option, is it safe to install another File Manager in place of Thunar? I want to avoid any concerns with system stability and reliability.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

When I try to update I get an error message...."Couldn't fetch the package cache information lists".
So I tried to install updates manually with terminal and got another error message...
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Is anybody else having this problem? Can you tell me what I need to do to get updated?
Thanks..

Enabling USB ports in Oracle Virtualbox versions 4 & 5

Whenever I've set-up Oracle Virtualbox to test guest operating systems, there seems to be a problem with enabling the computer's USB 2.0 (in VBox version 4) or USB 3.0 ports (version 5), so that the attached devices communicate with the guest OS. I found a neat remedy at http://askubuntu.com/questions/25596/how...virtualbox that I'd like to share, which worked for me...

Essentially you need to be in a vboxusers group. Open the terminal and type in the following:
Code: sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers <username>

(I think -a -G can alternatively be typed as -aG though I haven't tried this)
You need to reboot or logout/login for group membership to take effect.

When you have shutdown your virtual OS, go to Settings, within Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, then down to USB, select this, and then click on the blue icon of a USB plug with a green cross on it on the right hand side of this window. Attach various USB devices and click the green cross each time, so that the devices appear in a list under USB Device Filters (with a tick next to each one). Don't forget to click 'OK button' at the bottom-right so that the changes take effect.

Regards
Mike
