  Hi there
Posted by: jsward69 - 10-16-2015, 05:30 PM - Forum: Introductions - No Replies

Just signed up to plumb the depths of your collective knowledge.  I'm sure I can get LL to work for me, but I'm struggling.

I don't think it's entirely me.  I started my career working with SunOS 4.1 and I was a Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris at one point.  So I don't have a problem with the operating system per se - I just can't seem to get it to do completely what I want.

I'm sure you lot will sort me out. Smile

Cheers,
Jez.

  Media Centre Ready?
Posted by: jsward69 - 10-16-2015, 05:24 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

A few years ago I bought myself a little Intel Atom PC (A Zotac Z-Box) to sit next to my TV and act as both a central file server and for playing various media on the telly.  I really wanted it to be Linux powered and I put Linux Lite on it.  I had a terrible struggle trying to get the audio out through the HDMI and on top of that, hardly any media streamed across the internet worked.  I persevered for a few months but eventually threw in the towel and put Windows on it, which, for all its flaws, just worked.

Being a good netizen, I kept my machine updated.  With Windows 8 it started to feel the strain and when I offered it up as the sacrificial lamb for my first Windows 10 upgrade, well...the upgrade went fine and I actually quite like Windows 10 (what little I managed to experience of it)...but it was a step too far for the little machine and it was rendered useless.

So I've come back to have yet another stab at Linux.  I liked Linux Lite before so I tried it again.  So far I've just used Live mode from the USB, but it does seem to have come along.  It only took a couple of minutes to get the HDMI audio sorted, and not a command line in sight (not that this bothers me).

What's more, most of the internet video works.

But not all of it. Notably, Netflix still doesn't "just work".  A few catch-up TV services work, but a few don't.  The internet is my only source of TV (I don't have a digital receiver and my signal's rubbish anyway) so it's rather important that all of this works for me.  This day and age, I don't think that's asking too much.

So I'm here to ask you all: is this feasible yet? Can I genuinely use Linux as a Media Centre PC without having to resort to hacks and kludges (like WINE)?  Or will I have to see if I can find an old XP CD that'll install?

Actually, even if it comes down to hacks and kludges, I'd be interested to know if I can get LL into a usable state.

Cheers,
Jez.

  Lite not finishing loading
Posted by: Colin23erk - 10-16-2015, 09:32 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (15)

Hello
I have Lite and Win-7 dual booting which have been  working OK  for over a year

After a problem with Win-7 I reinstalled it after which I could not boot into Lite (black screen with Flashing cursor

I used  Boot-Repair Disk to mend the boot menu

I can now boot to Win-7 OK .

When I try to boot to Lite the Lite-Splash screen comes up - the progress bar goes normally for a 3rd of the way  but then goes very slowly to the end . The PC then hangs

  Solved: Can't extract .gz packages
Posted by: paul1149 - 10-16-2015, 04:22 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

Wondering if I did something to my system. The other day I made the mistake of doing a "system upgrade" within SystemBack. Lovely program, but I wish it had better documentation. My fault, but I was careless and let it remove some stuff.

Now I can't extract .gz files. I think I was able to before. Is that correct? I did a System Restore using SB, but it didn't help this problem.

Thanks.

  Computer Crashing
Posted by: Tycho - 10-15-2015, 11:56 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

Greetings and Salutations,

I have just installed Linux Lite on my Compaq PC, Everything went great until I tried to log into steam via the game manager provided with the installation of linux lite. Everything froze, then after about 20 seconds of wondering what I had done to cause this issue, the screen changed to little repeating echos of the screen all over at a bit of a angle. I tried moving the mouse to see if something on the mini screens now all over the monitor would move and nothing. I turned the system off and restarted, I tried steam again, exact same result. I decided to post on the forum and before doing so I thought to gather the system information to post along side the incident report. well guess what, as soon as I finished deciding where to save the file to, and it began to run the scan, boom, same deal. So I opened the computer and got what information I could. It has 2 gb ram, an AMD Athlon x2 cpu, and some variety of nvidia graphics though I don't see a stand alone card so might be the onboard. Please help!

Thank you for your time and consideration,
Tycho

Security Advisory for Adobe Flash Player
Posted by: torreydale - 10-15-2015, 07:45 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

https://helpx.adobe.com/security/product...15-05.html

Firefox uses version 11.x in Linux Lite.  So until you see a security update for that (they’re saying sometime next week), you might want to consider using Chromium or Google Chrome for browsing.

  Hello world

Hello Linux lite friends.

When my windows pc died i decided to give this Linux stuff a try again. I had tried to install mandrake linux about a decade ago, on a laptop i had back then. It was horrible, video wasn't supported and i had to change the config file and even then most of the hardware wasn't supported. I decided linux wasn't for me.

But now i thought lets see how things have changed, and wow i must say things work a lot better i mean really a lot. It almost all just works on first install.

I needed a lightweight distro and so Linux Lite was my first choice. I tried ubuntu, Debian, mint etc. But Linux Lite is my first and biggest love it seems.
I really like the tools to install extra software and config samba. I love how clean the installation is. If i need more stuff i just add it myself.

And i even had to reinstall it, because it messed up my groups and couldn't do sudo anymore.  :-\
Well i guest that is part of learning how to do stuff.

TL;DR;
Linux lite team, thanks for all the hard work.
