  Hi all
Posted by: ScotchandWry - 07-14-2025, 06:40 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

I’ve recently installed Linux Lite on a Dell Latitude 3120 laptop. The installation went smoothly and everything works, even the touchscreen. I was able to install all the software I use with a combination of the Lite Installer and Synaptic. However, when I installed ProtonVPN using apt in the terminal, I ended up with a choice of two desktops at the login screen; Gnome and Xfce. I much prefer Xfce.
A Big thanks to the Linux Lite team for an excellent distro.

GRUB UEFI not detected after GPT setup — need terminal-only fix
Posted by: tarik linux - 07-10-2025, 10:29 PM - Forum: UEFI Secure Boot - Replies (1)

Hello everyone,

I'm running Linux Lite 5.4 on an HP machine with BIOS Legacy. I've converted my disk to GPT and created a proper EFI partition. I installed GRUB in UEFI mode via terminal (no Live session available), but my firmware does not detect the fallback `bootx64.efi` file. I'm still booting using Legacy mode via F9, and I can't use `efibootmgr` because EFI variables are unavailable in my current session.

What I'm looking for is a way to force UEFI boot using only terminal tools, without removing GRUB Legacy or risking an unbootable system. Ideally, I want to activate a UEFI path that my firmware will recognize, even if it requires copying files manually or testing alternate bootloaders.

System info:
- **Linux Lite Version**: 5.4 (Ubuntu 20.04 base)
- **Memory**: 1.8 GiB
- **Motherboard**: HP 80BF
- **Kernel**: 5.4.0-216-generic
- **Graphics Chip**: Intel HD Graphics (x5-E8000)

Any guidance, script, workaround, or documentation that could help me achieve UEFI boot without a Live USB would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

404 Errors on update - PPA (wseverin)
Posted by: JimmyJim - 07-09-2025, 06:50 PM - Forum: Updates - Replies (5)

Hoping someone can help -- I've not been able to update for a while now. System works well other than that. Also included hardinfo.

And was wondering if there was some sort of a checklist published that might help the user troubleshoot updates? Something like common failures, solutions to try. Reading various solutions, I see recommended solutions that I really do not understand.
Thanks to all...

installed Linux Lite - only get GNU prompt
Posted by: misterbela - 07-09-2025, 12:56 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (8)

Hello, loaded and installed Lite from USB. Gave me an error at the end of the install. Laptop now only shows GNU GRUB prompt. Can't get out of it. I did the exit twice and gave me a startimage failed: load error. I should still have Windows on the machine. I tried boot order to do computer first and also tried USB first too. No difference. Would like to be able to use either Linux Lite OR Windows at this point. But stuck at the grub prompt. Please help. Thanks!

  Libre Office - no create
Posted by: MarkHoward - 07-07-2025, 01:27 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

I installed Linux Lite 7.4 last week along with the associated version of Libre Office. (so - newbie)

When I open Libre Office, under the Create Menu, all the options are greyed out and unavailable.
In this situation, if I go Open File and navigate to an ODT file and click Open then I get a "Filter Selection" window with contents that suggest it thinks it's a chart.  It won't open.

If, however, I navigate to the same ODT file through File Manager and double click it, it opens faultlessly.  Same for .ODS files.

Is someone able to help me Create a new file or open an existing file through the main menu please?

Thanks, Mark

  some sensible questions
Posted by: trinidad - 07-01-2025, 03:47 PM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

I've been terribly preoccupied lately with building a new server and dealing with the annoying wait time for Debian 13 stable to drop. Anyway I was checking some references today and ran across this post on getcyber. It's a short read but addresses some of the frustrations I have with the modern Internet and the ridiculous amount of piled on new learning required to be up to date. Anyway I am of many of the same opinions expressed in this brief article. If you are as frustrated with the manic pace of Web "modernization" as I am it's nice to know we're not alone, and that there are people with considerable expertise who are asking why, and like me even postulating that "security" excuses are often only creating a more expansive fertile ground for security leaks and some "easier to use" programming languages are doing the same thing.
