Version 5.4 no longer supported - Shane - 10-13-2025

I see Version 5.4 is no longer supported post April 2025.

Is it still safe security wise to use version 5.4 ?

How do versions 6.4 and 7.4 differ from version 5.4 ?

It looks like the website no longer has a shop that sells the USB boot drives for later versions ?
So a download from the website is the only option to get a later version ?

All software has vulnerabilities.  The patches issued to supported software help to minimise exposure.
Using unsupported software increases risk of exploitation as the hidden vulnerabilities are exposed but not patched.

Best to start by reading the release notes.

If you have any specific questions, please ask.

I believe the shop section was present until the website redesign in August.

A direct download (or torrent) should work, there may be other ways - avoid buying media from auction sites.

Thanks stevef for the prompt reply.

I will check out the link to release notes before I decide which version to download.

Thanks Jerry.

RE: Version 5.4 no longer supported - Shane - 10-25-2025

Why was Firefox browser replaced with Chrome browser in later versions 6.6 and 7.6 ?
The size of each install is increasing :
version 5.4 1.4GB
version 6.6 2.4GB
Version 7.6 2.9GB
For me Chrome is a negative and adding more features is a negative.
I'm happy with Version 5.4 and only need BASIC features which include Firefox, Libreoffice, pdf viewer and plays videos.
My Macbook Air computer is 10 years old.

Is Linux Lite still the best option for me OR can you recommend another LIGHTWEIGHT version of Linux ?

Mozilla made Firefox a snap package which was seen as a negative.
If you are prepared to have snap on your system, the snap version of Firefox is available through Lite Software.
Alternatively instructions are given to use a non-snap version of Firefox.

Yes.

Browser preferences are clearly subjective.  Before the release of 6.0 there was an active thread discussing what Linux Lite 6.0 default browser should be - ultimately the choice was Jerry's. Features added since 5.x include language packages and accessibilty options which are intended to allow more people to use Linux Lite.  Other features have been added because they have been requested but I guess you can't please everyone.

As you are aware 5.4 is unsupported but there is no obligation to do anything about it.

This is your decision only and discussion isn't appropriate on this forum.
See the forum rules -

This includes requests for basic support, requests for recommendations, comparisons, benchmarks and other common sense examples. In this Forum you will receive the help you need regarding Linux Lite but please do us the basic courtesy of posting in places on the internet where support for other distros is more specific like their user Forums or more broadly, places like Linux Questions dot org.

Good Luck

From what I read on the internet there is Snap Firefox versus Deb Firefox for linux.
In layman terms what is the difference between Snap and Deb versions ?
Why is snap version seen as a negative ?
Is there a thread on LinuxLite that answers these questions ?

All I could find on the internet was:
Snap improves security and gives faster access to updates.
The downside to snap, it is slower and some applications may not work on it.

True enough - the deb is referenced in this thread.

Quote:In layman terms what is the difference between Snap and Deb versions ?
Different philosophies on how software should be packaged.

Quote:Why is snap version seen as a negative ?
The snap approach is not seen to be aligned with the open source model.
Requirement for the system to support another package manager.
Increased disk space requirement.
There are counter arguments of course.

No single thread as far as I know.
