  [SOLVED] Lite 2.6 stopped loading at Splash screen
Posted by: nublix - 11-29-2015, 01:33 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (20)

First, I am a Linux newbie.

I only installed Lite 2.6 two days ago. I totally replaced Win XP, even set up the partitions as suggested when I asked on this forum. The installation went well, I think as I was able do the installs at first start up, set the screen how I wanted it etc.

Anyway today I turned on the computer and it has been loading for the last 45 minutes and has not gotten past the splash screen. I rebooted and got a screen with the following:

GNU GRUB version 2.02 ~beta2 -9Ubuntu 1.4
Description: Linux Lite 2.6 GNU/Linux
Advanced options for Description: Linux Lite 2.6 Gnu/Linux
Memory Test (Memtest 86+)
Memory Test (Memtest 86+, serial console xxxxxx)

At the bottom of the screen along with the up and down arrows for selection etc.

Press Enter to boot selected OS, 'e' to edit Commands before booting or 'C' for a command line.

Can this problem be fixed?
The computer I'm using is not very new. Pentium 4, 3.06 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 1TB Hd. As for Drivers, not sure what to look for but the mob is a D915GAV. Hope someone may have an idea what's going on.

  CPU Bars in the XFCE CPU Graph isn't working
Posted by: TuxInAGalaxy - 11-28-2015, 06:35 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

I'm having trouble with the xfce4 CPU Graph on my Linux Lite 2.4 32 Bit System.  As you can see from the Video the graph part is working, but the CPU bars isn't doing anything.  Also the memory bars isn't showing up either.  I'm wondering why.

I hope you can see what I mean in the video here:  Do any of you know what I might need to install?  I don't have this problem on mint xfce 17.2.  At 2:26 I show some of the property settings.  While you don't need to watch the whole 4 minutes, If it was working properly you should see the CPU bars jumping around in the bottom right hand corner of the screen next to the Menu and Directory Menu on the bottom Panel.

  Linux is user friendly
Posted by: austin.payne - 11-27-2015, 09:17 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

Okay so let me tell you a little story. I have a friend who is 13 years old. Her computer broke and she asked me to fix it. So I took a look at it and saw that the hard drive was broke. So called her dad, and told him that the hard drive was broke, and since there was no back up, I was going to have to reinstall the operating system. I told him that windows 7 was about $70 on new egg, or I could install LinuxLite. I was told that $70 dollars was out of the question. So I grab my spare hard drive, and put LinuxLite on it. I gave her back her laptop, showed her the basics, and went on my way. After she had been using it for a couple months I asked her how it was going. She said that it works just fine and that she wasn't having any problems.

Now if a thirteen year old can do it, why do people think it is so hard?

  How do I install 'Redshift' properly so that it's fully integrated?
Posted by: m654321 - 11-27-2015, 05:36 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Being a PC user in the evening, I'm very conscious of not getting too much blue light exposure from my screen at that time of the day, as it can interfere with the one's quality of sleep during the night.  With this in mind, I wished to have the open-source Redshift package integrated into LL, so that there is an automatic spectral shift from red to blue near to and following sunset, as with the f.lux package with Windows OS.

I downloaded & installed  redshift 1.8-0ubuntu6 & gtk-redshift using LL's synaptic package manager, but the icon for redshift that I put in the panel, fails to stay there when I click on it, and redshift generally doesn't appear to work, though it did initially (the day before) when it was installed. I have now removed it, using synaptic, and wondered if someone could advise me on how to install it properly, if you've had success with it.
Many thanks
Regards
Mike

  Best sticky notes?
Posted by: paul1149 - 11-27-2015, 02:50 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I realize that I could really use a desktop sticky notes program for keeping track of odds and ends. But I've yet to find one that is suitable. I just installed Knotes, which necessitated the installation of a whole lot of K libraries with it, but I find it to be quite buggy. Changes in settings like color and fonts do not take, and the prog has disappeared from the Panel.

Is there something else available?

Thanks.

  Cursor handling
Posted by: paul1149 - 11-27-2015, 01:09 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

I suspect this is a general linux issue, either at the core or the desktop management level, and not something LL controls. But this is my main linux portal.

I have found the way the cursor is handled to be a nuisance. If you double-click a word in LL (I'm ascertained this in LibreOffice and Slimjet), only the word is selected. Neither the space before or after is included. Similarly, the CTRL[-Shift]-left/right arrow key combination does not include the trailing space.

The problem with that is that if you either Cut or Drag and Drop your selection, you are left with a double space where it once was, and you will be missing a space where you Drop or Paste it.

Also, when deleting a word with the CTRL-Del/Backspace key combo, an extra delete must be employed for the untouched space.

It also creates some navigational anomalies with commas and such when CTRL-left/right arrow keying around the document. The cursor will skip over words entirely and have to be returned using the opposing arrow key. Or at the very least you have to advance the cursor an extra space to get to the beginning of the next word.

This is a relatively small thing, I know, but it breaks the flow of typing, and I continually have to check to make sure I've accommodated the way linux works in this regard. It would be better, IMV, if the word selection algorithm were to include the word boundary on the far side of the word.

  Where did Virtual Box come from?
Posted by: Coastie - 11-26-2015, 11:05 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

During my last updating, I saw Virtual Box was being updated. Now I get a notice when desktop is up that Virtual Box is not running. I did not even know Virtual Box was installed. Does not appear to be causing any problems. What is going on?  [img alt=???]https://dfgkh547-jsdfv8.iyhkj.tk/forums/Smileys/default/huh.gif[/img]

Checked with Synaptic and some VB packages are installed. Should I uninstall them or just leave then alone?  ???

  Gui based man page browser on your desktop.
Posted by: avj - 11-25-2015, 10:42 PM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (2)

This is a short tutorial to set up a desktop shortcut/launcher to the xman program.  Xman is a gui based man page browser it comes already installed in Linux Lite, and makes it easy to view man pages.  If you don't know what a man page is look at the following link.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/man

All you need to do is copy the following code and paste it into a new text document, in the text editor.  After pasting click "save as" on the file menu of the text editor and save it to the desktop folder with a name followed by ".desktop" such as "xman.desktop" and then close the text editor. You next need to right click on the new icon and click the "Make file executable" from the menu.

Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Name=Xman
Comment=Xman Man page browser
Exec=xman -bothshown -notopbox
Icon=system-help
Path=
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false
Name[en_US]=ManPages
GenericName=Xman Man page browser

That's all there is to it.
