Where did Virtual Box come from? - Coastie - 11-26-2015 During my last updating, I saw Virtual Box was being updated. Now I get a notice when desktop is up that Virtual Box is not running. I did not even know Virtual Box was installed. Does not appear to be causing any problems. What is going on? Checked with Synaptic and some VB packages are installed. Should I uninstall them or just leave then alone? ??? Re: Where did Virtual Box come from? - Wirezfree - 11-27-2015 When you install any Ubuntu based distro, it also installs Guest Additions. Why..?? because you maybe installing it into a VM, and having the Guest additions already installed means it is likely to run out of the box.(No pun intended )Yes, There was three updates for V4.3.XX for Guest components, normally these should not create any issues, because they are only there in the event of this being a VM Guest. That is why when you are actually running an Ubuntu based Guest you need to keep it up-to-date, and matching the Host, along with matching extensions pack in the Host.(Thanks torreydale )If you are not running VBox, you can remove them via synaptic. Not sure why this problem occurred now, there have been many updates, the last one only a month or so ago. Re: Where did Virtual Box come from? - Coastie - 11-27-2015 Thanks, Wirezfree. 8) Re: Where did Virtual Box come from? - Josef - 11-27-2015 I like to suggest that LL admins re-check the recent updates of VM Virtualbox!? In my case the extension pack's were left behind what caused that VirtualBox aborted during start-up. This was quickly solved via update, thanx to the LLforum and torreydale. However in watching the system during LL start-up procedure a box appears for a few moments telling that VM VirtualBox Kernel is not running....??? Despite that LL works fine and VirtualBox does, too. Re: Where did Virtual Box come from? - Wirezfree - 11-27-2015 @Josef The extension packs are optional, and not "normally" delivered by distro upgrades. Also, the Virtualbox components are part of the underlying distro, nothing to do with LL. Unfortunately you need to manually update it, from a download the Download Page. "VirtualBox 5.0.10 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack All supported platforms." If you are still on one of the 4.3.xx versions, the links are just below it. Also like having to update the Guest Additions when there is an update to Virtualbox. |
