  Excellent OS
Posted by: NeonRed - 03-07-2016, 05:16 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (8)

Always found ubuntu to be lacking in stability especially after updates.
For that reason, I often stuck with mint linux, but its so fat.
I tried customizing a basic ubuntu server, but still the overall configuration and stability was unacceptable.
Until Linux Lite 2.8 (my first attempt with the distro) and it was a flawless experience from the beginning to its current state.
This is a testament to work behind the project.
Really the only flaw I can see is in the theming; its too segmented.
There needs to be a tool called Themes where the whole appearance is changed in accordance to the specs of the given theme.
It should also easily allow users to create custom themes.

  Skype microphone/webcam recogition issue
Posted by: enawrat - 03-05-2016, 10:07 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (3)

I am new to this operating system, which I have come to because MS Vista is losing support very soon. Thus far I am very impressed, but with one key exception. Skype is an essential part of my old operating system, but I cannot get it to work in Linux Lite - despite trawling through forum responses and Google searches. I cannot get my microphone to be recognised, though the Pulse Audio volume control shows an input response to my voice (on board SigmaTel HD and plugged in mic). No application is shown as recording – when Skype and Audacity are running. The Skype sound test, though perfectly audible, fails to register a recorded message from me. Audacity, however is able to record/playback plugged in and on board microphones. Is it perhaps no coincidence that guvcview and Skype do not function as expected, since my on board webcam (Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC6 with self-installed R5U870 driver) also refuses to record video in the former, and activate in the call window in the latter? I should be most grateful for some guidance, though please bear in mind that I have had limited experience using the terminal. These are my system details:

  Very strange network error...
Posted by: glin22 - 03-05-2016, 03:34 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (14)

Hi,

This is the first time I came across such a strange network problem like this.

What I am trying to do is to get onto a certain website but everything I have tried just doesn't work. The strange thing is I can get onto other websites with no problems whatsoever. I tested both Firefox and Chrome but I get the same result with the website in question, when I type in the address of the site in the address bar, I can see the indicator trying to do something but it just sits there, no data is loaded into the browser. Even in the host system nothing I've tried will work (I am using LinuxLite 2.8 in a virtual machine on a mac using El Capitan, the mac is the host, and I am on a wireless connection).

I had a talk with the tech person who provides internet access thinking it might be something on that end but he thought it was not that since I can get other websites besides the one I want. I've checked proxies, browser plugins, etc. I even did a traceroute on the site, it will go to a certain part and then no data gets transferred. If I ping the site, no pings happen. I've contacted the owner of the site, she's given me some things to try out but that hasn't done anything either.

If you have any ideas on how I might solve this problem, please let me know as I have completely run out of things to try out. Wow, what a mind blower, maybe it's something simple that's not set right but I don't know what to look for.

Thanks,

Glin22

  Failure to install Updates
Posted by: coreyman - 03-04-2016, 09:58 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hello Linux Lite Community:
In the past few days, whenever I try to install updates, about halfway through the process it freezes and a window appears with a red "X" stating, "Couldn't fetch the package cache information lists".
Attached is the system report I performed after several update attempts.

Fix for Google Chrome on Linux Lite
Posted by: valtam - 03-04-2016, 04:36 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (39)

Source - http://www.webupd8.org/2016/03/fix-faile...ome_3.html

We've removed Chrome from the Lite Software 32bit version.

For 32bit Google Chrome:

Open a terminal and do each of these commands one at a time:

Code:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
sudo apt-get remove google-chrome-stable

Install Chromium via Lite Software. Do not keep Chrome installed on 32bit Linux Lite. You are placing your system at risk by taking this chance.

For 64bit Google Chrome:

Open a terminal and do each of these commands one at a time:

Code:
sudo sed -i -e 's/deb http/deb [arch=amd64] http/' "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list"
sudo sed -i -e 's/deb http/deb [arch=amd64] http/' "/opt/google/chrome/cron/google-chrome"

Suggestions for a cpu memory meter
Posted by: FOM - 03-01-2016, 10:50 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

With only 1 gig of ram and minimal cpu I need to watch what I'm doing carefully. The task manager progress graphs and % reports do the job, except it is using 10% to 20% of cpu itself. I'd like to find a low resource cpu/memory tool for desktop use. Truly a little meter in the taskbar would be best.
Anybody know of such a tool?
Thanks

[size=1em]Probably one for the Devs.??[/size]

[size=1em]Out of curiosity how complex would it be to get Linux Lite on a Raspberry PI,[/size]

[size=1em]especially one the the new Quad Core 1.2GHz with WiFi&BT Raspberry PI 3.??[/size]

[size=1em]I know there is a Debian Distro, and various others.[/size]

[size=1em]But there is a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS distro for the PI[/size]

Edit:
Just found this Ubuntu Mate for Raspberry PI3
I'm curious, don't want to detract from Linux Lite Aims.

  Hello, World!

Positive experiences with Linux Lite have been dominating my cyber-world.  It is polished, stable, and quite robust for being a 'lite' distro.  My implementation is not so lite.  There is nothing that I know of that gives some other distro the edge.  Linux Lite has become my favorite distro in a very short time.  Amazing, eh?
