  Darktable Photo Editing
Posted by: aviceda - 03-09-2016, 10:09 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Just wanted to give a big 'heads-up' to 'Darktable' https://www.darktable.org/, probably my favourite photo-editor which is especially good for 'raw' file use. Unfortunately the version that is available through LL2.8 is rather out-dated (I had to add v2.0 from their PPA as my camera wasn't 'recognized' by v1.4)

Enjoy....

New Install on Intel Braswell CPU
Posted by: Wirezfree - 03-09-2016, 09:56 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

Hi,

Trying to install on a Intel Braswell CPU(N3150)
Set BIOS to all "Legacy".
Booted Live, played a little all seemed O.K
Then installed without any issues, then re-booted.
Immediately after the BIOS splash the start up text is broken/torn, completely un-readable, wait no desktop appears.
Never get to read if any messages pop-up during boot.

So I re-booted Live, all O.K, and then did an inxi:

Code:

In Display settings in a "Live Boot" it's indicating 1920X1080 but it shows 0.0Hz like in inxi above, not sure if this is because it's a Live Boot.?

Doing some Googling it appears Braswell was added from kernel 3.19, so that could be part of the issue.??
(( Although it looks fine in Live Boot with 3.13 ))

Can I install more recent kernel from a live boot.??
If yes, how to do it, I have found some things via Google... But they look very hairy  :o

Any help much appreciated... Thanks

  Can't remove Chrome Web Browser
Posted by: djh - 03-09-2016, 08:14 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Post installing and updating I then headed to Lite Software and started with the Remove option - however, when trying to uninstall Chrome Web Browser I get the error "Unable to locate package google-chrome-stable"

Ideas?

Edit:  Looks like solution is to install Google Chrome stable and then uninstall Chrome Web Browser!

  Returning back to Linux Land
Posted by: djh - 03-09-2016, 07:54 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Hi all,

I first cut my teeth with Slackware Linux about 20 years ago working for a company pioneering video on demand over ADSL. Did that for about 3 years but since then have only worked with Windows and OS X.  In the last few weeks I have been trying out many different distros just for fun, nearly got fixed on Manjaro but then came across Linux Lite v2.8 and have been pretty impressed!

However, I did have some initial problems when running Installing Updates immediately after installing only to hit my first error dialog saying "couldn't fetch the package cache information lists" - not a good start but fixable with a visit to Dr Google which took me to https://dfgkh547-jsdfv8.iyhkj.tk/forums/other...ate-issue/ - which looks like an old problem rearing its head again!

Anyway, liking it very much so far - the only thing I really miss from Manjaro is their boot loader which is smart enough to remember my last used OS (I dual boot with Windows 10).  Is that something that could be done for Linux Lite?

  No signal during boot
Posted by: ihinkican - 03-09-2016, 04:01 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (10)

Hi
I have installed LL2.8 x64 from a live cd to a modest  dell dimension e521 (AMD sempron 3400+). I upgraded the video card to a gforce gt610  at 1360 x 768 and added 3 gig of ram.

My current issue is that when I boot the computer the monitor has no signal until the desktop(xfce) loads. the live cd had a splash screen to cover the usual code that scrolls during boot as did the previous 2.6 and 2.4.

I did not have the issue with 2.6 installed or any  of the live cd versions of 2.4,2.6.2.8

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

long story short,

In my case the best solution was to go do something else. The system has no signal during boot but once booted the system appears to function. no one has an explaination

second best effort was open /etc/default/grub as root and remove "quiet splash" then sudo update-grub, reboot

If that does not work for you try

hold shift down for the grub menu

hit F4 for a text boot

hit shift F2  to see the boot splash

hit shift F1 to see boot text

remove the # from GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub ( also try add: GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text as the next line, ) then sudo update-grub, reboot

try an optional driver

try another distro

excellent Distribution BUT! - very limited options on changing screen resolution
Posted by: patarok - 03-08-2016, 12:02 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (2)

I really loved your distribution.
I saw it and i was in love with it from the first moment.
Easy. nice. clear. structured. i really began to hope for having finally found a useful linux dist.

BUT:
then it happened. i tried to change my display res.(connected by VGA - no other option)
from 1024x768@60Hz to 1280x768@60Hz or something else...
NOT A CHANCE.
I dont get the fr... idea behind having to manually trick around with xrandr and manually creating special xorg.conf files in a modern times Operating System.
Thats not especially the fault of the linuxliteos packagers... because "ubuntuwide" i dont see an easy way to get around this if you have old displays or projectors and want to get the maximum out of them.

There  are loads of randr apps with which you can change res. from one sys-preset res. to another. But not a chance to put in a certain resolution you know your device is capable of, testing it and permanently add it to the xrandr listings or not to say permenantly boot with the same resolution if you do not want to frickle around with some system files.
You are nearly there... but changing the resolution on a display is such an essential thing. and many linux users dont tend to buy the newest or very popular hardware(incl. displays)

and if i can do that with gtf, xrandr, add a mode manually, why cant we automate this or even have a program for such issues...? I really dont get the point.
The thing it really kills me and i could write down my problem here about 99times or so is just that it really bugs me.
I tried to set up an old machine today for managing my RAW image files in the cellar where i also have a mini-studio for product photography. i set up everything installed darktable etc.
but i tried a few times with one dist. (it was a bit older and set up my display automatically but i wasnt able to obtain a recent version of darktable with this distro.) next dist. not a chance.
next dist. problems with install.
next dist. would work somehow but quirky. but not a chance to set the resolution right.
next dist. - linuxliteos... looks good. set up everything. REALLY looked like the big deal. read about easy to configure even install for fglrx...
Then ... i saw new fglrx threw out radeon 9600 series cards... so no proprietary driver... no amdccle ... no easy changing resolutions... tried to manually install legacy driver... failed(-too old to fit in) ...tried a few times with xrandr apps like arandr etc... then my left eyelid began to twinkle... because i saw ITS ABOUT 50min PAST MIDNIGHT and I spent a whole day trying to get a decent resolution for my display to work. --- IF YOU BELIEVE IT OR NOT. I HAD THAT(SIMILAR) PROBLEM WITH A DOZEN DISTS BY NOW. - no i will not add anything manually anymore.  because i think that is like if i would have to start a new Audi quattro by attaching a crank to a hole in its front-grill and winding it around like its 1930... no not with me. thank you.

You have a really nice distro here. really promising. but that with the custom resolutions and so on is something you should really do something about.
I am not a programmer and i dont want to become one, but i have a bit understanding for all those things because i visited a higher educational school for IT and biz for one year, when i was younger;
And I am really convinced that you could deliver a solution for such problems easily if you want to.
script based, or i dunno what... but me and loads of other linux users would really like to see a change here.

  Bluetooth IOgear with i-sound headset
Posted by: ihinkican - 03-07-2016, 10:56 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (7)

Hi
I am having an issue with bluetooth..device added successfully but failed to connect

installed linuxlite 2.6 x64 and  updated

the bluetooth iogear gbu521w6 and the headset i-sound BT-2500

lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21e8 Broadcom Corp. BCM20702A0 Bluetooth 4.0

lsmod
bluetooth            391136  22 bnep,btusb,rfcomm

I found this post
https://dfgkh547-jsdfv8.iyhkj.tk/forums/netwo...inux-lite/

long short after reboot the computer never reached the desktop...

after reinstall and update I edited /etc/bluetooth/audio config as posted

[General]

Enable = Source,Sink,Headset,Gateway,Control,Media
Disable = Socket        ...............added these two lines as did not see an enable item or any unhashed item similar.

HFP=false.....changed from default true to false

[A2DP]
SBCSources=1
MPEG12Sources=0  .......unhashed these three items

I skipped the update as already up to date and the bluemon, pavucontrol and pulse-audio-bluetooth appear to already be installed

When the first attemp failed I suspected as the post is from 2014 that the updates were already included and created a new problem

I added fw-0a5c_21e8.hcd to /lib/firmware and rebooted.....device added successfully but failed to connect

is the iogear no longer out of box goodness for linux?

is the i-sound headset not linux friendly? it works with all the other devices but I got it for this unit,

do I need a different firmware? where and how would I do that

do I actually need the ppa source added and to update blueman, pavucontrol and pulse-audio-bluetooth...doing so appears to be a problem

It was evidently a nice fix in july 2014 but does it still apply?

likely something simple but I am at a loss

Thanks for reading

Any thoughts?
