Installing ThinkOrSwim
Posted by: torreydale - 11-03-2019, 10:12 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

Getting this popup.  Have a class starting soon and can't get this working.

When I follow the instructions at this site https://mediaserver.thinkorswim.com/inst...stall.html, I get the following:

Quote:torrey@LM-Cinn:~/Downloads$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
You are about to add the following PPA:
The Oracle JDK License has changed for releases starting April 16, 2019.

The new Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Oracle Java SE is substantially different from prior Oracle JDK licenses. The new license permits certain uses, such as personal use and development use, at no cost -- but other uses authorized under prior Oracle JDK licenses may no longer be available. Please review the terms carefully before downloading and using this product. An FAQ is available here: https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/...-faqs.html

Oracle Java downloads now require logging in to an Oracle account to download Java updates, like the latest Oracle Java 8u211 / Java SE 8u212. Because of this I cannot update the PPA with the latest Java (and the old links were broken by Oracle).

For this reason, THIS PPA IS DISCONTINUED (unless I find some way around this limitation).

Oracle Java (JDK) Installer (automatically downloads and installs Oracle JDK8). There are no actual Java files in this PPA.

Important -> Why Oracle Java 7 And 6 Installers No Longer Work: http://www.webupd8.org/2017/06/why-oracl...rs-no.html

Update: Oracle Java 9 has reached end of life: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/j...48520.html

The PPA supports Ubuntu 18.10, 18.04, 16.04, 14.04 and 12.04.

More info (and Ubuntu installation instructions):

Debian installation instructions:
- Oracle Java 8: http://www.webupd8.org/2014/03/how-to-in...ebian.html

For Oracle Java 11, see a different PPA -> https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/06/ne...buntu.html
More info: https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/ubuntu/java
Press Enter to continue or Ctrl+C to cancel

I am already running Java 11:
Quote:torrey@LM-Cinn:~/Downloads$ java -version
openjdk version "11.0.4" 2019-07-16
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.4+11-post-Ubuntu-1ubuntu218.04.3)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.4+11-post-Ubuntu-1ubuntu218.04.3, mixed mode, sharing)

Using libimobiledevice to download PDFs from iPhone to laptop
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 11-02-2019, 04:40 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

I’m hoping someone can help me here. I send exams in PDF form to my students and I have set one student up with a donated older iPhone 5. I googled and saw that libimobiledevice allows communication so I installed it.

It sees the iPad I connect to it, however when I highlite the iPad there is nothing to view. I installed nautilus and again it shows up in the menu, however it doesn’t show any documents or folders etc, just blank.

I sense there is  something else I need to do...

Can anyone explain what it is I am missing or is there another way in which these PDFs can be obtained other than connecting to wifi and saving them from going to what’s app web and downloading them from there?  The guys don’t often have internet access is why I am looking for another way.

Maybe Bluetooth, but I’m not sure if that will work from an iPhone to Linux.

  Packages ... configured multiple times
Posted by: Steven Norton - 10-31-2019, 09:58 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

After skipping a lot of updates, I recently went directly from v3.4 to 4.6. Now when I try to update, I get a long list of error messages. Do I need to go in and edit some of these .list files by hand ? Or is it safe to just delete one of them completely ?

Won't boot into desktop after idiot (me) changed something
Posted by: acanning - 10-31-2019, 03:36 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (3)

Hello All

I’ve been an idiot and messed up my Linux Lite installation. I was attempting to reduce a screen tearing issue and, after googling, typed in these commands;

sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
echo -e ‘Section “Device” Identifier “Radeon” Driver “radeon” Option “TearFree” “on” EndSection’ | sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amd.conf
sudo reboot

The problem is that the PC now doesn’t boot and ends up with a black screen and flashing curser. The article above says that if I want to reverse this I can run the following command;

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amd.conf
sudo reboot

Trouble is that I can’t get to a command prompt now to run the command which I think is just deleting the 20-amd.conf file.

I have removed the hard drive and plugged it into my laptop which is also running Linux Lite. I can get to the correct directory but the drive is read only so I can’t delete the offending file.

Please can someone help, it’s not the end of the world if I have to do a complete reinstall but I’m sure there must be a way of removing this file.

Many thanks

  Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe No Digital Sound
Posted by: acanning - 10-31-2019, 02:15 PM - Forum: Sound - No Replies

Hello All

I have an annoying problem with an ancient Asus A8N32 motherboard. I have installed Linux Lite 4.6 - 64 bit without any issues other than the sound from the onboard coax digital output doesn’t work at all. It works from the onboard analogue output and also from the HDMI output on the Graphics card. Because of the speaker configuration I have it would be very handy to get the coax port working. In Windows 10 the output works fine so I know it isn’t a hardware problem.

When I open the audio mixer app I can select Digital Stereo (IEC958) output but no sound comes out. In the Output Devices section the Port is described as Digital Output (S/PDIF). Selecting Analogue works just fine.

I’ve tried several Linux distributions (Mint, Fedora) and they don’t work either so I guess this problem may not be solvable. I’m not sure what info might be helpful but I can provide the following…..

The System Summary app describes the Audio Adapter as Nvidia CK804

  Passwords and Keys app missing?
Posted by: Searchernow - 10-30-2019, 03:38 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hi, problem on a computer, I hope I can fix the following:

on a fresh install of LL 4.6, after all updates etc., with full disc encryption, the Passwords and Keys utility is missing from the menu! How can I get it back, please?

possible cause..? on the previous install that app had been on the desktop, (via - Menu>add to desktop), and I deleted the desktop icon, but surely that never deletes the apps themselves?
Also I Restored the deja dup backup (to original locations), but that shouldn't affect settings, apart from FF etc. profiles...?

I did not use Timeshift restore.

Edit: I am still asked for passwords to keyrings in the normal way, so that's working.

E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Anyone able to help?
