Duel boot will not "see" Linux Lite anymore
Posted by: Rapidrob - 12-25-2019, 10:08 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (8)

I just loaded updated duel hard drives into my computer. Both have the latest version of Linux Lite and Ubuntu.
These drives HAD the last version of each O.S. When I booted the Desktop Computer I had an option to select either OS and it would boot to the selected OS. This has always worked. Same wires, same hard drives, same sockets, different versions of OS's.
NOW, the same screen is shown allowing either OS to selected as before. BUT, if I select the Linux Lite from the menu I get an error after ten seconds saying no device found???????
If I unplug the Ubuntu hard drive ( it is listed and will auto load to that if I leave the selections alone) and try to boot to the Linux Lite hard drive, the computed boots to it instantly.
It is only when BOTH hard drives are connected to the motherboard that the Linux Lite is NOT SEEN if selected.
Please help.

A message for MS: try 32-bit Linux Lite - still good...

Try LL 3.8 32-bit, the last version in series 3 that has 32-bit - it's good till sometime in 2021. I still use it from time-to-time & it works well. Using a Debian base, rather than an Ubuntu one for LL, would prolong 32-bit in LL beyond 2021, but I'm sure Jerry has good reasons for not doing this, e.g. Debian is not quite so beginner-friendly as Ubuntu.

Have a good Christmas Day!

Cheers
Mike

  Wild and crazy stuff
Posted by: MS - 12-25-2019, 10:54 AM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

These are some rogue ideas and questions that have been roaming around my mind for a time now.

First, Internet services. People typically buy and use pre-paid subscription services, which use to reset the available data transfer supply back to entry value for every customer, each new 'month', regardless whether 1% or 100% of given transfer was used - charging full conventional price. What about if you could actually buy and use only as much as you need or want? You see, the "amount" of Internet access one gets, in data flow, is sold in packages, much like microtransactions known from another field. You buy per 10, 50, 100, 500 or 1000 GB of data in download and upload thresholds, for example. Bought packages are understandably cumulative, with order of expenditure matching the order of purchase. The customer has all the available data until use up, ideally speaking, but in certain scenarios, one year expiry date could be imposed. When either the edge of use up or expiry date comes close, an application - something like the 'Lite Widget' or a little monitor of a sort somewhere else - pops up and tells one is about to drain the supply. Okay, but what if I am a gamer using some cloud services for gaming and I am just in the middle of a very important duel? There must be some immediate mean to 'pump up' the data flow stock available. If so, one could opt for a smart-watch, which would always indicate how much of data storage is available for given user, for all connected devices. Preset default package, one click or two click buy, done in an instant. I call it 'the fluid model'.

EDIT:

Speaking of gaming services, in case all desktop was to be based on the cloud and the actual quality PC hardware was to be a matter of selected settings, I wonder how this could affect the gaming industry. First of all, native gaming would basically equal contemporary cloud gaming. It would make better sense if games were bought and streamed from the same source the virtual desktop resides in. Which means, the desktop would only make for the 'access gate' to a game, telling whether the purchased setup allows to run the game and how well it can do, while the very game itself, would be streamed anyway.

Unnecessarily better than contemporary visions of cloud gaming, which do not base on any particular user-dependent hardware setup, but it would make more money, since gamers buy gamer level of stuff.

Face it, if you want to milk anyone, at least milk those who voluntarily involve in useless stuff anyway.

New installation not booting - blackscreen
Posted by: dalolo - 12-24-2019, 10:46 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (7)

Merry Christmas erveryone!

I am new here and also quite new to Linux overall - i hope someone can help me as I am slowly running out of options due to my limited knowledge...

My situation:

  • I have a 7 year old notebook, so far running Windows 7 but due  to ending support in Jan I wanted to look into alternatives and found Linux Lite
  • The notebook is old but the time I bought it it was quite a decent machine with an Intel Core I5 processor, 8GB RAM, 32GB SSD and 750GB HDD. So it should be a good fit for Linux Lite. See attached SysReport for details.
  • Booting Live from a USB drive works like a charm!
  • I wanted to utilize my SSD for fast booting so the idea was: 32GB SSD (complete sda) for / as EXT4; first 16GB of HDD for SWAP; rest 734GB for /home as EXT4
  • Installation went through just fine but when I reboot and try to boot from sda where the MBR was written, I just get a black screen and within 3 minutes the machine heats up like hell - it won't start up.
What I tried so far:
  • I thought maybe there's a problem with graphics drivers I chose to be downloaded during installation as they are not available during live boot - so I tried installing without them same behaviour
  • I thought maybe there's some problem with my SSD - thus I tried just using the 750GB hard drive, defining my two partitions plus SWAP there and create MBR/boot from there same behaviour
  • I thought maybe my whole idea of partitions and mount points was wrong - so in addition to the try before I let the Linux Lite Installer manage the 750GB HDD - looks like it would only create one partition for / still same behaviour
  • I thought maybe there's a problem with compatibility to xfce (though that doesn't make much sense, live boot worked - you see I run out of ideas and need your help  :-\ ). Still I tried the same with Bodhi Linux which works with Moksha desktop also same behaviour.
Does anyone have a hint for me what I could try next? Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

  XFCE vs KDE
Posted by: valtam - 12-21-2019, 08:19 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (176)

I've been noticing on the Internet there is talk of KDE catching up to XFCE in terms of performance and memory usage.
Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to see if there was anything in it, and yeah, they are pretty close now.

A quick LL build of KDE...

Using Blender in Openshot video editor
Posted by: lintek - 12-20-2019, 08:53 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

I am trying to use BLENDER in OPENSHOT and I get the error in the pic below.  When I try and point OPENSHOT to the BLENDER file path (which I think is /usr/bin/blender) I still get the same error.  What am I doing wrong?
