From what I can observe from the log, it's an OBS thingy. Do I just have to reinstall OBS to fix this? Or try remove the repo for OBS?

Major thank you people for answering. m(_ _)m

Noob question... Running Perl Install script - warnings & question
Posted by: alcanz - 01-06-2020, 02:31 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (4)

As it looks like no one has tried F-Prot AV, I'm trying to be the guinea pig.

I've discovered that LL comes with Perl v5.26.1 already installed, but who would have guessed that this is a much later version than v5.8?  I don't get that.

Anyway, I have succeeded in downloading the FP for Linux tarball, and extracting the files into /opt/f-prot as recommended.

The install instructions simply say:

Quote:cd /opt/f-prot/
./install-f-prot.pl

I tried that (in Terminal), in various forms but only got: 'command not found'.

Seems odd, since perl is available (perl -v works), so tried:

sudo perl -W -- install-f-prot.pl
{-W means 'enable all warnings'}

and got:

Quote:Unquoted string "mailtools" may clash with future reserved word at install-f-prot.pl line 199.
"my" variable $paths masks earlier declaration in same scope at install-f-prot.pl line 500.
"my" variable @m masks earlier declaration in same scope at install-f-prot.pl line 698.
"my" variable $prog masks earlier declaration in same scope at install-f-prot.pl line 793.
Name "main::mailtools" used only once: possible typo at install-f-prot.pl line 199.
Name "Term::ReadLine::new" used only once: possible typo at install-f-prot.pl line 1166.
Name "Term::ReadLine::ornaments" used only once: possible typo at install-f-prot.pl line 1165.
Name "Term::ReadLine::readline" used only once: possible typo at install-f-prot.pl line 1167.
Use of uninitialized value $ENV{"MANPATH"} in split at install-f-prot.pl line 255.

You are about to install F-PROT Antivirus for Linux Workstations
on a Debian Linux 4.15.0 running on x86_64 into the '/opt/f-prot'
  directory

Would you like to have a wrapper script created for fpscan.
If you choose 'no' a symbolic link will be created instead, you should consider this if the wrapper script does not work for you, for example due to your system using a non sh or csh compatible shell.?
(Just press Enter to accept the default) [Y/n]:

I've had a little look through the install-f-prot.pl code, but I know nothing about Perl.  It looks as if some of the warnings may be irrelevant, but wouldn't that suggest that Perl is going to misinterpret the actual code? Could it be that v5.26.1 is not fully backwards compatible?

I broke out but don't know what to do. I notice it says Debian rather than Ubuntu, but I guess that's not important?

If I run this and it fails, how bad will the mess be?

Any suggestions, please?

Anti-Virus again... F-PROT anyone? Why I need one
Posted by: alcanz - 01-05-2020, 10:27 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (12)

Hi All,

I know there have been endless discussions here about the pros and cons of AV. Regardless,  I have a compelling reason for needing an AV - and this may affect many of us.

My first Linux Lite project is to replace the slow, tired old W7 laptop that I've been using for Internet banking.  I've used F-Prot for Windows on it for years without issues or incident (despite the fact that the application also hasn't been updated for years).  It gets very frequent virus definition updates, often several per hour, so that must count for something, though how effective it really is, I don't know.

Banks are generally risk averse, and my bank seems to be at the upper end of that.  Their Terms and Conditions state the following as a Breach:

  • You have used a computer or device that doesn’t have an up-to-date operating system installed for Internet Banking ... ; or that doesn’t have up-to-date anti-virus software installed for Internet Banking.

I know this is barely necessary in the circumstances, but those are their terms...  All I want to do is comply. I think that means frequent updates are necessary. Real Time scanning isn't specified... In fact, it would seem the AV doesn't even have to be used.  ???

My question is, has anyone used the (Free, Home User) Linux version of F-Prot on LL, and was it a good experience? It requires Perl 5.8 - is that already installed, or does that pose any problems?

Alternatively, I'd be willing to try Sophos for Linux if that works?

Any help much appreciated.

  Another Linux Noob!
Posted by: alcanz - 01-05-2020, 10:44 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (13)

Hello All and Happy New Year,

Well...  Where to start?  I'm pretty much the complete noob when it comes to Linux. However, LL has already won my heart, despite the multiple problems I've had since starting a couple of days ago. None of the problems were due to LL, and I'll probably give an account of one of them later, as others may find it helpful.  In fact, LL was a dream to download, prepare (Etcher) and install, and I was highly impressed. The problems really started after I decided to split my drive, reformat and reinstall, but again, they turned out to be nothing to do with LL, which was doing its best all along.

I started in computers with CP/M - built up a CP/M system (Yep, soldered all the chips!) with 64KB & 2 x 8" 1.2MB floppy drives -- and MON'09 - Motorola's 6809 SDK, and was a DOS geek for a while... Spent many hours writing Batch files.

When I first used an -ix version it was CLI-only and ran on a 286 (for those who can relate), but though I was very impressed, had no reason or budget to buy a system back then, so never continued with it. In typical human fashion, the best marketed product won despite being inferior, but Windows may have finally had its day.  I've tried one or two Linux installs in the last year or two, but never felt any affinity for them. That all changed with Lite, so I'm really looking forward to getting deeper into it.

FWIW, I'm really good at breaking things, making mistakes (like forgetting to check my Spam folder for the Authentication e-mail  :-[ ) and finding bugs - and offering ideas on occasion, so I expect you'll hear more from me.  I look forward to participating, and will try not to bug you with questions that are already answered here or in the manual!  :o

Regards,
Al

Printer keeps uninstalling when turned off
Posted by: arky217 - 01-03-2020, 10:40 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (3)

Running LL 4.6, printer is a Samsung network printer, model ProXpress M4070FR,
and is connected to my router via ethernet cable.

When I first got the printer, I powered it up and connected the ethernet cable.
Then I started the computer and the printer automatically installed, and worked fine.
No problems with the printer for some time, but recently (may be when I upgraded
to LL 4.6) the printer keeps uninstalling itself when I turn it off.

I usually keep the printer powered off because I don't use it that much,
so I really have no idea how long ago the problem started.
But before this problem, every time I started the computer (with the printer off),
the printer was still installed.

But now, whenever I start the computer (with the printer off), there is no printer
installed. If I then power up the printer, there is still no printer installed)
But if I reboot the computer with the printer powered up, the printer again
automatically installs itself.

I have never had a printer that, once installed, uninstalled itself.
This may have nothing to do with a LL update or any other update,
but I'm stymied as to what to try next.

Any suggestions ?

Data recovery : most important areas of Ext4 filesystem
Posted by: minesheep - 01-03-2020, 11:43 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

Faulty drive tried cloning, but didn't work. Where is the critical data for ext4 fs are stored? my drive size is exactly 31,406,948,352 bytes. Only first 512mibibytes seems not to be enough. No partition table just ext4 directly on the drive. The drive is filled with raw music without any headers. So photorec won't work. the drive is detected only untill I try to copy a lot of data (1gb+) off. Copying 512mb at time and connecting them to about 32gb image didn't work. Since I am doing this for personal use only even partitial recovery would be ok. Tried to open the whole image with audacity but the music jumps between multiple files because of lack of filesystem to manage the data. So I can copy data off the drive but getting all data the filesystem needs is my target now.

  ssh x11 forwarding with wayland
Posted by: trinidad - 01-02-2020, 05:05 PM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

In my small office which has one decent AMD Debian desktop, one Debian Lamp server, one Winodws 10 box, and four private LAN Debian 10 clients on less robust hardware I have used ssh x11 forwarding for a long time. After recently upgrading all the clients and the larger host machine to Debian 10 I decided to stick with wayland on all of them once I figured out the various configurations for ssh x11 forwarding. Wayland does not break ssh x11 forwarding contrary to the griping you read on the internet. It just requires a different praxis. Wayland ssh clients will need a nested Xserver (Xephry is easy and reliable) and wayland hosts will need the GDK_BACKEND=x11 preset string. I use gnome-boxes regularly this way to keep the CPU/RAM tax of virtualization on my bigger host machine. Below is a list of example commands for all the possible configurations.

KDE Neon: where can I download 2018 version for comparison with LL4.6?
Posted by: m654321 - 01-02-2020, 11:22 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

[member=5414]firenice03[/member]
Thankyou for the link you gave in reply #93 on the KDE vs XFCE thread Smile
It made an interesting read, and for those who didn't see it click here:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevange...76065a26d2

Does anyone know where I could download a 2018 version of KDE Neon? All I could find on trawling the internet was the 2019 version.

The reason I ask this: I would like to compare KDE Neon directly with LL4.6 on our Asus X71Q, which is a machine at the opposite end of the power-spectrum compared to the two machines used in the above link for the KDE vs XFCE investigation. The 2018 version is directly comparable to LL4.6, e.g. both use kernel 4.15.  If anything promising comes of it, I'll post the results on this forum.

Many thanks for any help with this.

Is the 'dd' command absent from LL4.6?
Posted by: m654321 - 01-02-2020, 09:34 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Using terminal, I wanted to create a bootable USB stick with another distro on it - it works fine when I use LL3.8.
But, when I do this in LL4.6, I get the following:

Code:
mike@D630:~$ sudo dd bs=4M if=/home/mike/Downloads/antiX-19.1_386-base.iso of=/dev/sdc status=progress oflag=sync
mike@D630:~$: command not found

I've checked the /dev/sdx designation, and it's correct.

Does this mean that the 'dd' command is not pre-packaged in LL4.6, unlike in LL3.8 ?
I looked in Synaptic Package Manager, but couldn't find any application listed as 'dd'.

So, how do I run the 'dd' command in LL4.6?
