My story:

I hate Windows, its bulky, slow, bloated and invades users privacy. Even when I shut internet off (airplane mode), I noticed an VPN server suddenly activates (Express_VPN) and sends MY data to Microsoft, without my approval.This is unacceptable that I have NO control. Also, the incessant fighting between Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome for control of my browser and  my data. Also I do NOT want my data on a cloud.

So I am learning LINUX, began recently with a 32 bit machine. I want to carry my data with me and boot up on any machine with a LINUX USB portable drive, do my work and take my data with me. I am working on intellectual property  (patents).

This is first time I have written to  this forum (I believe), at least in regards to this installation (64 bit).  My hard disk does not work it had Windows 10/11, but I am not sending it to HP to fix, it has patents applications. So I am using a USB drive that I burned an image file of LINUXLITE To BOOT into LINUXLITE with old Toshiba 32 bit machine that I bought for $100 dollars that also had Windows 10/11 but was slow as molasses, so that was the original reason I started using Linux ( I am a poor Mexican).  Tried many Linux versions (UBUNTU, MINT, etc) and found to be still slow but finally got reasonable speed with LINUXLITE on the 32 bit machine, but still not completely happy since a little slow but workable.

I saved my money and bought a new 64 bit Windows 10/11 machine. However, THE hard disk failed (this machine) i am typing on. Since I had some success with LINUXLITE on 32 bit I decided to use LINUXLITE also for 64 bit. 
However, a complete USB install fails to a portable USB drive (its a 128 GB USB). However, for the last several months I have used my machine this way, writing my data onto another USB drive that I mount and use as a data file, and take with me. No cloud. I also like that this machine cannot go onto internet unless I use my cellular phone to tether a  USB port. Protects privacy of my data from being sent since I only connect when i need to (like now) with my data USB drive being unmounted to prevent any data breaches.

Thanks for linuxlite. Once I make some money I will donate to LINUXLITE.  I have a MSEE and I am a retired chip designer, as well as having a PhD in Biology.  I am now working on juvenescence (longevity, I hate the word geriatric) technology.  One last comment,  I have more hardware experience than software. However used UNIX extensively while designing ICs. I do have programming experience and also I have taught programming at the University level when in graduate school for my PhD after retiring, it was a low level language (Assembly, no C or C++ experience yet).

Release Announcement

Linux Lite 6.0 Final is now available for download and installation.

The theme of this Series is inclusion and freshness. The newest Browser, the newest Office suite, the newest custom software. It's always been my goal to provide a lean, fully functioning operating system. In Series 6x this will be our ongoing focus. New to this release are Assistive Technologies. Materia is the new window theme. Keeping that familiar appearance, Materia is regularly maintained and it supports GTK 2, GTK 3, GTK 4, GNOME Shell, Budgie, Cinnamon, MATE, Unity, Xfce, LightDM, GDM, Chrome theme, etc. Materia comes in both Light and Dark themes.





Assistive Technologies - Onscreen Keyboard + Screen Reader + Screen Magnifier

It's a well known fact that we target Windows users. Out of the box, Windows offers a fairly complete system. That includes tools for the hearing and sight impaired. In this release you can zoom in on the desktop, have a screen reader talk to you and complete tasks with an onscreen keyboard. We've made all of these functions highly configurable.

Onscreen Keyboard: Onboard

The onscreen keyboard application is Onboard. On-screen virtual keyboard is an alternative input method that can replace a real hardware keyboard. Virtual keyboard may be a necessity in various cases. For example, your hardware keyboard is just broken; you do not have enough keyboards for extra machines; your hardware does not have an available port left to connect a keyboard; you experience difficulty in typing on a real keyboard; or you are building a touchscreen-based web kiosk.



Screen Reader: Orca

Orca is a free and open-source, flexible, extensible screen reader from the Gnome project for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Using various combinations of speech synthesis and braille, Orca helps provide access to applications.

If you select Orca Settings, it will be enabled, you have been warned. Just Open System Monitor and kill the Task if it annoys you, use Insert key + S, or simply Logout/in. If you want it to autostart when you start your computer, go to Session and Startup, Application Autostart tab and tick the Orca box.

Insert+S toggle speech on and off.

Screen Magnifier: Left Alt + Mouse Scroll-wheel

Fairly self explanatory. Zoom in on any part of the desktop with the Left Alt + Mouse Scroll-wheel key combo.



New Default Web Browser: Google Chrome

Now that Firefox comes as a Snap package from Ubuntu, and Windows users need to be able to deal with as few package managers as possible, Chrome was the obvious replacement choice. Huge market share, Windows familiarity, just about everything you throw at it just works, all with the backing of a little known company called Google. Web browsers are highly subjective, everyone has their favorite and everyone has an opinion. You can't please everyone, but what we can do is remain focused on our target audience and that's exactly what we did. We also include a built in Virus Scanner to Chrome supplied by Virus Total (disabled by default). Now Chrome will ask you if you'd like a file scanned before you open it. To enable this feature, just turn it On under Chrome Extensions.







Firefox is available to download and install via Lite Software. Just keep in mind it will install the Snap package system, so expect extra bloat and slow downs. Because Firefox is tied to Snap as a service, it won't appear in your Menu until you have rebooted.

Hi everyone,

As stated in subject. The mouse just randomly stops working - touchpad still works. I've tried unplugging it and using different usb ports etc. I have a dual boot with Windows and this problem doesn't happen in Windows. I have all the latest updates for LInux Lite. Any help appreciated, thanks,

Error: Failed to connect to firewalld.  Please make sure the service has been started correctly and try again.
My WIFI connection is fine and general internet access is good.

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

The can't won't etc. apostrophe bug has been fixed. Pretty URL's was the culprit. Every Pretty URL's update version I tried to use, broke the Forums. So I had no choice but to go through every file in the mod looking for clues, and finally nailed it. Best 5 hours of my life spent

Hopefully this won't affect anything else on the Forums. This won't fix previous Thread titles, but will work on any newly created threads. Thank you to the Mods for dealing with this up until now.

I would like to make this a topic that covers most of the basic grub problems and how to repair them

Your GRUB loader might have broken for a couple of reasons:

• You messed with the boot partition
  
• You installed Windows after GNU/Linux
  
• Or something else...
