This problem was solved by running a script when I had the updating problem with Lite 7.4.
I've once again, on two laptops, freshly installed Lite 7.6 and the problem has returned.
Running the same script I used before fails and I'm stuck. Please, any help on this.

it may be a case that trying a different repository other than Main USA may work.
Instructions are in the deprecated manual.
Click Menu, then 'Help Manual' to open your copy
Click Contents, then Software
Scroll down a little to 'Software Updates by Country' and click on the word Repository.
Follow the instructions there
(Sorry, I haven't found a way to link to the wiki)

I can confirm that the server error still comes up today from the main USA repo. Do we know the cause of this? Not used to EU servers being more accessible than US servers.
