LL 4.4. I downloaded "System Information " software on my computer and now I have a Desktop window constantly showing my CPU / memory usage displayed that has no "X" to turn off. How can I get rid of the window?

I believe you're referring to the Lite widget... Has the feather logo and such... Its a conky based app but to disable/enable..
Menu > Settings > Sessions and Startup > Under Application Auto Start - Tick/Untick the box "Lite Desktop Widget"

No, this is the result of software I downloaded called " System Information". It shows the status of all things in the system of my computer.
It has installed a WINDOW on my DESKTOP that shows CPU usage, and memory usage. It is a large window taking up 1/5TH of my display.
There does not seem to be a way to turn it off.

Yuck! I think I would uninstall it and use the Lite Widget instead! Or you can explore, using Synaptic, the different "Xfce goodies" that can display system info on a panel, nice and out of your way.

If I try new software (application) on my system and it doesn't work the way I like, I remove it and try something else. One of the great things about Linux is the many different apps to do something. Lite Widget displays basic system information, comes installed on LL 4.4 and can easily be turned on or off.
Give us some idea of what you would like to see displayed and likely someone here can make a good suggestion for an appropriate application.

Late to the party, but you could kill it with the Task Manager.
