Suggest we improve updates-gui in this regard. I'm under the impression that whenever a server cannot be reach, it throws that error out which is very generic.

Maybe we want to add tips on how to deal with this issue such as "switching to a different mirror", gathering the error output and suggesting the user to post it in the forum to ask for help?

It doesn't happen often but when a server is down, the user doesn't know that the communication with the remote server didn't succeed, which gives the impression that something is wrong with the installation and that's likely not the case. (unless broken packages / ppas are the root of the problem).
