Screen Resolution got Jacked up and now can't get into LL

Hi,

Using Nvidia 304.116 drivers on Geforce 6150 LE integrated graphics.

So I started and my screen resolution was set as 1024x768, where it should be 1440x900.  I tried to manually change the resolution, but it did not show my screen resolution anymore as an option.  Even if I changed to another option, the changes didn't stick and it reverted back to 1024x768.

Then I tried both detecting the screen and manually setting the resolution in the advanced options, but no joy, it reverted back to 1024x768.

Then I tried uninstalling Nvidia drivers by going into recovery mode by holding the shift key while restarting, but it says loading Grub menu and then the screen goes blank...forever.  I can't figure out how to get into recovery mode to uninstall.

Then I tried changing to version 173 drivers and my screen resolution went to 640x480, I think, and I could no longer even get into the Nvidia configuration, nothing happened when I click the Icon.

So then I tried changing to version 96 drivers and now I can't even get into LL, screen goes blank after the BIOS screen closes.

I am only using this computer for the internet, so the only changes I have made for many months are running the updates.  I have not installed any software or made any other changes.

Not sure to what to do at this point, I'd rather not have to reinstall.  I have an old backup I could restore, but I assume I will run into the same problem when I run the updates?

The GeForce 6150 LE is not supported by the additional nVidia drivers in LL. Try this next time:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-173
sudo nvidia-xconfig

reboot.

if it doesn't work you're stuck with the nouveau driver, or you could just get a newer video card, better for gaming

Hi, the 304 version drivers were working just fine and then I dunno what happened, not sure if it was due to an update because I don't always reboot after updates or something else.  I decided I would update to 1.08, but having issues with that, it just wants to boot to the command line.  I had the same issue when I installed 1.06, and I just unplugged the monitor on the initial boot and LL loaded and I was able to update the drivers, but that isn't working this time. 

So, how do I start the GUI from the command line or do I need to do something else?  I tried looking for the answer in the archives and couldn't find it.  Thanks again for any help.

Hello everyone ! I am trying to get a Nvidia GTX 280 working.
Here is the situation-
I have a Intel core2duo, and nvidia GTX280 ready for use as a family computer.

I installed LL and everything works with the generic video driver. However i need to utilize the nvidia card for Steam games.
So i installed the nvidia 340 driver from "install drivers" on the LL menu.
I get a good bootup, however i cannot change resolution from 640x480.
GLX does not function either.( i tried every driver in the list as well, with same results)

So i have looked around and found information stating that the Nvidia GTX 280 needs the 173 driver. (legacy)
Which so happens does not work with newer Linux kernels from what i understand.

I have tried installing from synaptic package manager the 173 driver, but i get an error "no screen found".
So i ran purge-nvidia, and all went back to normal.

Is there a way to revert to a kernel that will work? If so which one is recommended ?
Or shall i just get a newer card ?

Found a driver from 2012 lol.. http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-displ....64-driver
These look to be for x86 (32bit)

Also as far as kernel... I don't see anything right off... I would figure 3.x.x would suffice, LL default is kernel 3.19 I believe..
Unless you have updated your kernel to 4.x.x ..

Thanks firenice03 i'll try the 340 driver. I have tried it already, but i'll give it a go.
If i do end up finding a solution i will post.

I have not found a solution to this issue, It seems kernels that are newer do not support the 340 driver and earlier.
*research done here= http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=118862  and other posts saying to revert to 304.
I have had been purging nvidia several times, so time v.s. $60 for a cheap new card.
I have opted just to buy a newer video card. Thanks for the help everyone.

Too bad nothing from NVIDAs site, they had a slew of Linux drivers...
