I tried a few bare metal installs:

BIOS mode:
1- boot USB stick created via dd: successful
2- confirm BIOS mode: successful
3- install calamaris deb package provided by Jerry: successful
4- perform OEM installation to empty disk: successful
5- reboot into OS: successful

EFI mode:
1- boot USB stick created via dd: successful
2- confirm EFI mode: successful
3- install calamaris deb package provided by Jerry: successful
4- perform OEM installation to empty disk: successful
5- reboot into OS: FAILED (system hangs at blinking cursor)

NB:
* system has been offline
* ISO couldn't be booted via Ventoy (did not test/investigate further yet)

5- reboot into OS: FAILED (system hangs at blinking cursor) - does a hard reset boot you into the Desktop?

It may be an edge case.  Networking on the live boot has worked sometimes.

The networking problem was first apparent when the live boot install was checking system requirements after fix for the rsync 11 error.  The notebook is old (originally W7) and I was half expecting that LL7 would be the last version it would run.  The fact that my earlier attempts to install (which ended with the rsync 11 error) got past the requirements check and through the options to enter wifi passwords at the appropriate point suggest the network must have been working.

It's odd - suggests a timing issue - could it be linked to the optimisation of boot times ?

edit - There's some potential confusion/cross posting. For clarity, this post is my thought on the live boot network symptom I've experienced.  Not directly related to LL-user posts about live booting.

No, it doesn't.

Sorry, misunderstanding, I wasn't clear enough. Am using an old desktop computer for testing which is off the network. The system requirement check warned about the missing network connection correctly. After acknowledging the warning the installation went through.

More a FYI, esp. for users also using Ventoy:

1- Booting the USB stick with Ventoy in BIOS mode, selecting LL 8 RC1 ISO, then choosing in the menu:
   "normal" => booting successful
   "GRUB2" => booting failed (error: alloc magic is broken)

2- Booting the USB stick with Ventoy in EFI mode, selecting LL 8 RC1 ISO, then choosing in the menu:
   "normal" => booting successful
   "GRUB2" => booting failed (error: unaligned pointer)

It hangs, no error message, no time out. When I - after quite a while - press the power button, the machine immediately switches off.

If I get around to it later, I'll reinstall GRUB and see whether that makes a difference.
