  battery and heat issues.
Posted by: reyn100 - 07-23-2014, 12:08 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Since installing LL 2.0 I have noticed a quicker drain on the battery and the machine appears to run hotter. Any IDEAs guys why this might be happening.

  Update problem
Posted by: Coastie - 07-22-2014, 07:45 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (32)

Updated a few minutes ago using "Install Updates" and received this message:

Configuration file '/etc/issue'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ?  Your options are:
    Y or I  : install the package maintainer's version
    N or O  : keep your currently-installed version
D    : show the differences between the versions
Z    : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** issue (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

Had to try a couple of times to catch to copy a couple of times before "Install Updates" terminal window closed because I "interrupted" by closing the window.

When I entered D:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  atomicparsley get-iplayer id3v2 libany-moose-perl libclass-load-perl
  libclass-method-modifiers-perl libclass-singleton-perl
  libcrypt-blowfish-perl libcrypt-rijndael-perl libdata-amf-perl
  libdata-optlist-perl libdatetime-locale-perl libdatetime-perl
  libdatetime-timezone-perl libhttp-server-simple-perl libid3-3.8.3c2a
  libio-socket-socks-perl liblist-moreutils-perl liblwp-protocol-socks-perl
  libmodule-implementation-perl libmodule-runtime-perl libmouse-perl
  libmp3-info-perl libpackage-stash-perl libpackage-stash-xs-perl
  libparams-classify-perl libparams-util-perl libparams-validate-perl
  libsub-install-perl libtie-ixhash-perl libtry-tiny-perl
  libunicode-string-perl libuniversal-require-perl libwww-mechanize-perl
  rtmpdump
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

Not sure what the above items above are. (Firefox and Thunderbird were updated.)

I tried instruction and got the following:

coastie@coastie-desktop:~$ apt-get autoremove
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
coastie@coastie-desktop:~$ su  apt-get autoremove
No passwd entry for user 'apt-get'
coastie@coastie-desktop:~$ linux
The program 'linux' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install user-mode-linux

What does this mean and what should I do about it?

  Fileshare Applet Won't Run
Posted by: Kirkx - 07-22-2014, 07:52 AM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

Fileshare Applet is a small screenshot program. You can highlight any section of the screen with the mouse, upload the image to Imgur hosting service, and then paste the URL link from the clipboard to your forum post, etc. Unlike with most other similar apps, you are not restricted to making a screenshot of either active window or the whole desktop. Here is an example (it's the corner of the Panel + a bit of the desktop background):

Fileshare Applet is not available in any repositories, only as a deb package that must be installed manually.

I had no problems installing and running the applet in Xubuntu v14.04, but in LL v2.0 when I try to start it from the App Menu it just won't run:

(click anywhere on the page to zoom it to 100%)

and is nowhere to be seen in Task Manager either (it is installed as "indicator-fileshare"):

----------------------------------
Here are installation instructions.

1) Download the zip file and extract it to any temporary directory:

http://aikikode.github.io/fileshare/

2) In LL install "build-essential " from Synaptic or:

Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential

At least I had to install this in Xubuntu v14.04, I'm not sure if it's really needed in LL.

3) Build the installation package. In terminal "cd" to the directory that contains file "build_deb.sh" and run the following command:

Code:
./build_deb.sh

4) Check if the following deb file has been created:

Code:
indicator-fileshare-0.5.2.deb

5) Install Fileshare Applet

Code:
sudo dpkg -i indicator-fileshare-0.5.2.deb

6) Check where it was installed

Code:
dpkg -L indicator-fileshare

7) Edit Applications Menu and <Settings - Session and Startup> (to enable/disable Fileshare loading at LL startup).

8) Start Fileshare Applet and sync it with Imgur.com (follow on-screen instruction to enter your account info).

  User Account Permissions and Access
Posted by: ke5wxw - 07-21-2014, 08:41 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Hello all! I have just installed the Linux Lite 2.0 and thnk that it is awesome! I am fairly new to Linux and am having problems figuring out how to do certain things. I had an old laptop with XP on it and wanted to give it life again. This gave me a good excuse to jump in to the world of Linux. I also wanted to make this laptop my sons for when he starts school this coming fall. I am only wanting him to have access to certain individual programs, like Libre, Media player (vlc), etc...just the basics. Is there anyone who can face me in the right direction? Is there a GUI that makes this easy or do I have to learn code? Thank you for such an awesome OS!

[SOLVED] HP 3840, 3845 printer. can't get LL/HPLIP to recognize
Posted by: mountainhick - 07-21-2014, 08:07 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (8)

I referred to this thread: https://dfgkh547-jsdfv8.iyhkj.tk/forums/index...opic=270.0  and followed tutorials. HPLIP is updated, also did a full system update for LL

Running through the menu/settings/printers menu, the printer is not seen/recognized

Running through menu/accessories/HP device manager, via USB I/O selection, the printer also is not "discovered"

The printer is plugged in to USB, and powered up. Tried restarting printer, unplugging/plugging, restarting computer in multiple different sequences, still nothing.

Please help. I have no idea how to proceed from here.

Also, I am trying to fix this via talking my mother through it step by step by phone, so unfortunately, it is quite laborious even to just get her to enter simple terminal commands. Whatever, have to get her through it.

Thanks

CD rom suddenly wont write? :((
Posted by: elliott - 07-21-2014, 12:34 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (5)

hi guys i often use my cdrom to daul boot and noticed that it no longer loads when i start my computer up with a iso in it. and when i put a cd rom in to burn, it gives me an error after it tells me i can burn about it not being able to mount... i used this cd rom yesterday, and it still reads in my bios so something tells me this may be a settings issue, do you think me just updating could have caused it seeing it worked fine yesterday? im really worried because i use the cd rom a lot. Sad reinstall drivers somehow or does it sound like it broke? it still tries to burn, i see it listed in biso and in my os.... scared here any advice?

"Failed to unmount 'blank CD-rom disc" drive cannot be used for burning."

Cannot install the right language pack
Posted by: rayon - 07-20-2014, 04:18 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

Hello,

I want to switch the system language to German. To do so I followed the description given here in the forum.

Update language support

It's checking the language support but doesn't ask me to install a new language pack (I told the system to make German the system language.).

So I thought maybe the German language pack is already there. In the list of languages there is "German", but it's grey. So I cannot activate German.

If I click on 'Install / Remove Languages' there is already a tick at German.

If I deinstall the German language pack and install it again nothing changes.

I don't know what else I can do. Is it possible to install the language package just as a normal package with apt-get ?
