Holding back the base-files package

It seems some people are getting confused whilst upgrading, when faced with the following options:
Code: Configuration file '/etc/issue'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** issue (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?
Configuration file '/etc/lsb-release'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.

This can be quite destructive as it effects the way your computer boots.
In the next version of Linux Lite I'm looking at holding back this package, in the meantime to do this open a terminal:
Code: sudo apt-mark hold base-files

Hi, my name is Alberto Boschini and I am a newbie here. I just have installed Lite last friday night and I am trying to learn as much as I can. Once I have done this, I would like to offer all the help I can to people who, like me, will start to walk this way.
I like it a lot. I know I have not seen much yet, but I am pretty sure I will shortly, and as I said, I am willing to learn as much as I can. Love this thing!
Thanks. Hope to hear from you people soon,
Cheers,
Alberto

I am new to Linux, have tried various distros over the last month or so and Linux Lite 2.0 is the one I plan on sticking with, awesome for a few days, no bugs what so ever!

Hi there! My real name is Ray, but you can call me either Ninja or Ray (I like both). Been a Linux user for about three years now, and was a distro hopper for 99% of that time. Tried Linux Lite out after noticing it on www.distrowatch.com and figured I'd give it a go after finding Debian 7 XFCE to not suit my needs. Installed LL via USB a couple days ago and have been loving it ever since!
Once again, hello and I hope to get a chance to talk to everyone soon! ;D

Hey LL Team, new user here! First, let me say that I love LL! Soooo aesthetically appealing and friendly! Couldn't be happier with 2.0!
So, here's my small problem (more of an annoyance, but enough for me to come to the forums for help).
This doesn't occur every time I start up Chrome, but seems to happen more frequently when I restart or start up my laptop. I access Google Chrome from the Whisker Menu, and while it's booting up, a prompt pops up asking me to unlock the keyring. It won't allow me to use Chrome unless I pop my password into the prompt. Tried searching the internet for a solution to the problem, but so far, can only find solutions involving older (around v10.10) versions of Ubuntu, or entering System>Preferences, which I can not find via the Whisker Menu search. Is there any way for me to stop this from happening?
Thank you to anyone and everyone who can help me solve this issue.

Tor Browser...

Noobie here! I'm a big fan of Linux Lite since April 2014 and have been using 2.0 on all of our machines since June (Hoping that this is the forum to ask this question, so bear with me). Everything has been fantastic, until the last major update late, last week. After the update, all of the machines have the Ubuntu 14.04 splash screen. Not really a big deal, however, we keep getting an error when we try to fire up the Tor Browser. It appears to start up and then nothing. When we try to open it again, we get a pop up window that says: Firefox is already running, but not responding...
I go into the task manager to close it, but, same problem when we try to reopen it. The only way to get it working is to restart the machine. has anyone else here run into this problem? and what did you do to correct it?
Thanks in advance!
Butelo

Atheros AR9485

I have a very recent Asus computer with an Atheros AR9485 wifi adapter. I have tested it with Lite and other Ubuntu variants. None of them recognize this adapter, yet it has been supported by Debian and the other distributions for years. Strangely, it does work in Manjero (I don't want to go there.....)
Does anybody know what to do in order to get wifi working?
(Thanks in advance.....)

I wanted to share my Linux Lite story with the rest of you.
I own a software application company. We program in C# and Silverlite and use both Azure and .Net environments. Last year we started hosting Azure on Ubuntu as an experiment. It worked out great. So I decided to put about a dozen machines on Linux for the employees who had non-technical jobs. I searched for a distro to use..... (Lots of protests though from the intended users.....)
I evaluated many distros but I found Linux Lite to be pretty intuitive and very flexible. So under lots of protests from my staff, I switched everyone to Lite. (I also faced a ton of hardware upgrades that Lite saved me from. I needed a lite weight Linux that was user friendly yet pretty complete....)
We started with version 1.8 and have now migrated to 2.0. It has been a year or so since the migration.
Of the 12 machines we migrated to Lite none of them have required much in the way of support. In fact, our real cost of support on a Windows PC is about $6,700 (CDN$) annually. With Linux Lite? About $1,200 annually.
And what about the users who protested so hard in the beginning? Eight of them are now running some version of Linux at home. (The other 4 have Macs....)
I am still a Linux Newbie in many ways. All of my machines were legacy machines. Happily I will not have to upgrade them for quite a while. To my staff, I am a genius. (Which by the way.... I am LOL!)
So Valtam I just wanted to say "thanks". I hope that by sharing my story, other people will become inspired to try the same thing.
As for that company from Redman? They are stunned.

MD5 Checksum Tool

It might be a good idea to consider including MD5 checksum utility in the repositories. A few weeks ago I have spent quite a while looking for one in Synaptic and on the web. The most popular seems to be GtkHash, but it can only compute checksums, it doesn't have "compare" function:
http://gtkhash.sourceforge.net/
I have eventually found one tool that can verify checksums, Checksums Calculator. It's portable, there is no installer, you just need to unzip it to a custom directory, set permissions and create menu shortcut:
http://www.sinf.gr/en/hashcalc.html
