Installing an ancient ninja game from a .tar file
Posted by: Chompo - 12-13-2022, 06:11 PM - Forum: Games Support - No Replies

Hello there. I am finding it very difficult to install this ancient ninja game that seems to be available for Linux as a .tar file only. It doesn't help that all tutorials I could find mention .tar.gz files exclusively, but of course, I tried to follow them nonetheless (even making changes as I thought appropriate), to no avail (obviously, else I wouldn't be here). I have also tried following Help Manual's instructions, but I always get the message "No such file or directory" upon entering "./configure" instead of a list of dependencies. I feel like this shouldn't be so difficult. There must be some detail I'm overlooking, some stupid thing I am doing wrong.

As an aside, I have  looked into tarballs generally, what they are, what they eat, how they reproduce, etc, but unsurprisingly, understanding the issue conceptually isn't enough to find the magic terminal words that will instal my silly little game. I have learned a lot of Linux and open source related stuff since installing Linux Lite over a year ago, but am still a super mega noob, so I'd like to use this as an opportunity to learn a bit more. For instance, I'd like to know what the difference between .tar and .tar.gz files is (I've also come across .taz and tar.xz while looking for tutorials, no idea what these are either).

So much as a hint on where to look for a solution will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Wlan wird vom Laptop nicht mehr erkannt
Posted by: Peter Fietz - 12-13-2022, 04:12 PM - Forum: Introductions - No Replies

Hallo zusammen!

Minimalist LinuxLite desktop on old Ideapad
Posted by: pilpintu - 12-11-2022, 02:18 PM - Forum: Screenshots - Replies (1)

Hello! I installed LinuxLite on an old Ideapad 300S. Here's my minimalist desktop.

The wallpaper is here: https://wallpaperscraft.com/wallpaper/an...ade_124253

I replaced the panel icons with plain circles whose colors match the programs.

Yellow is the menu:

Cyan is the file explorer:

Orange is Firefox (installed from a PPA):

Red is Textmaker word processor:

Brown is Synaptic package manager, and black is the terminal:

The rest of the indicators (network, volume, etc) are on a second, hidden panel on the right.

My laptop's specs:

I am amazed at how fast LinuxLite runs with such limited resources! Everything works perfectly! Even Netflix runs smoothly on Firefox and Chrome. Amazing!

  Greetings from the south!!
Posted by: pilpintu - 12-11-2022, 01:37 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Hello everyone!!

I'm VERY pleased to join this community. I downloaded and installed LinuxLite only yesterday on an old Ideapad 300S, and I couldn't be happier. Everything worked out of the box and, most importantly, LinuxLite FLIES on this humble Celeron N3050, with 2GB RAM. I'm amazed!

I took my first steps with Linux back in 2006 just out of curiosity. Frustrating experience at first. With no one to teach me I did some silly things like trying to install programs by downloading them from the Internet! hahah

I can't count how many distros I have tried during these years. What I do know is that Linux has made my life sooo much easier. I'm a secondary school teacher and I see how my fellow teachers suffer with their Windows machines on a daily basis.

I have made some contributions to the community here and there, a wallpaper sometimes, some translations, that kind of things, which I really appreciate. That may be the reason why you develop a close relationship with Linux. You can invest time and effort on it, and see it grow and develop. I loved that from the beginning.

I think that my greatest achievement regarding Linux has been convincing my school to use Linux to recycle some old Windows XP and Vista computers. They gave me some extra time in my contract to install Linux on our library computers and maintain them!

Let's see where LinuxLite takes me now. I'm leaving some screenshots of my Ideapad installation in the screenshots section of the forum.

Greetings from Chile!
