Posted by: patrick - 01-11-2015, 06:14 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (12)

hi,
i just downloaded linux lite 2.2, this is the first time i'm trying linux. i'm quite excited to learn how it works, tommorow i will fetch myself a newbie guideline from the library.
though, for learning linux, i would like to start with a decently working os.
the installation wasn't really a problem, updating the system was also working, but every additional software i want to install is giving an error, skype cannot be installed (example).
any tips to solve this problem?

greetings,
patrick

problem solved thanks to an amazing forum,
thanks people, tomorow i'll be studying Big Grin

[SOLVED] Puzzled on my new project - auto mount partition
Posted by: ChrisL - 01-11-2015, 05:12 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (4)

I currently have a small SSD (128Gb) with LL 2.2 on it and which I use for my normal /primary drive/OS.

I have a second convention hard drive (1T) on the machine with Windows 7, Linux Mint Mate and a 500+ Gb partition (ntfs) labeled "Data" that I hoped to store photos/videos, etc. and make them available to all three operating systems.  The default boot is LL 2.2 and at the boot menu I can select the others, which works fine.

I was trying to follow this method:

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1609

I went through the commands to create mount point, take ownership, create directories, find UUID# and then add the fstab additional entries to auto mount.  When I boot into LL however, it stops while booting and says "disk drive for 2DEB175417534C94 is not ready or present enter W to wait S to continue or M to manually recover".

(2DEB175417534C94 is the UUID# for my Data partiton) if I Wait, nothing happens, if I Skip it boots fine and then Data shows up on my Desktop and I can mount it there, it shows as "Removable Volume mounted in "/media/chris/Data".  If I open it I also don't see the folders I created, but if i try and recreate them in terminal it says they already exist.

If I look at the partitioning in GParted I see /dev/sdb3 (which contains /dev/sdb7 the Data partition) and /dev/sdb7 show up with a set of keys next to them which would seem to indicate they are locked?  Is this the issue with the "disk drive not ready or present" or what am I missing here?

Any thoughts?

Chris

How do I stop LL2.2 from auto-logging out when listening to a podcast?
Posted by: m654321 - 01-11-2015, 10:16 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

When listening to an already downloaded podcast, using the Clementine media player that comes with the LL2.2 bundle, LL will somewhat annoyingly log-out automatically with regularity, i.e. ~ every 5 min, and the LL login-screen will then appear.  When this happens, the podcast continues playing but it can't be heard – this means that when I re-login, I find that I have missed some of the podcast and have to rewind to catch up on what has been missed.  What setting do I need to adjust to prevent LL2.2 from logging out automatically when listening to audio.

Many thanks for your help
Regards
Mike

  Health Tips - #1 - Portion Sizing
Posted by: bitsnpcs - 01-11-2015, 04:10 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (25)

Hello,

I offer here the first of my health tips. If they seem to be of interest I will add more threads over time.
My hope is at least 1 person finds this useful for themselves, a family member, or a friend.

Portion Size

When sitting to eat your main meal of the day, take an apple with you.
You need the apple at the table near to you , or if using a tray or lunchbox on the tray with your meal.

1/ Immediately after swallowing your last mouthful of your meal begin to eat the apple, as if it were the next mouthful of your meal. No 5 minute breaks allowed.
2/ You MUST eat all of the apple,  do NOT take your tray away, plate away or move from your seat until you have eaten the apple.

NB: I personally use the apple as desert.

Results

If you feel -

a/ very bloated soon after completing the apple, your portion sizing is too big and you need in future to reduce it.

b/ very hungry /hollow feeling soon after completing the apple, your portion sizing is too small and you need to increase it.

To Do

Increase or decrease your portion size, and this will vary upon the particular type of meal until you have educated yourself as to your exact requirements of portion size and meal type.

Considerations

An individual may with some foods feel hollow even though it is a portion size they usually eat, if this persists after 1 hour they should eat something. THIS is not a failure, it is part of your learning about a healthy diet.
This would then be a time to consider what exactly the meal consisted of and why it was insufficient for your body, and how exactly it was unbalanced for you personally.

Concluding

The purpose of the apple eating is to learn to listen to your own body, and be able to determine what it is saying to you correctly.
Eating healthily is not a diet, it's about being as healthy as you can.

This method is successful in learning to decrease weight, increase weight, and to maintain stasis/balance.
It is also very useful when eating new recipes or foods as your portion sizes will vary and it can help you prevent weight gain, or loss, from the beginning in yourself and those around you.

[SOLVED] How to assign a keypress
Posted by: jeffneedle - 01-11-2015, 01:05 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi.  Here's what I want to do.  I want to be able to press the Super key (the one with the Windows logo on it) and have it bring up the menu that lists my apps.  This will simulate how other distros work.  It's really convenient.  Can someone help me in getting this set up, if it's possible?  Thanks.

ChaletOS = pretty face on Xubuntu?
Posted by: Coastie - 01-11-2015, 12:14 AM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

ChaletOS seems to me to be a pretty face on Xubuntu with a few different and/or extra apps without all the extra great Linux Lite features. I may be paranoid but I don't think I would want WPS office on my computer since it is from Communist China.

Main problem I see is that it has no users' forum and neither does Xubuntu other than just the Ubuntu forum* I think you might get loss in the Ubuntu forum. It also probably has same bugs as Xubuntu 14.04 that reviewers have pointed out.

If you want the icons and/or themes for the Windows look on Linux Lite, the developer was nice enough to put hem on his home page. http://sites.google.com/site/chaletoslinux/theme-sources

*Another great reason to use Linux Lite is this great forum!

No WiFi after 'Install Upgrades' on start menu
Posted by: richardgillian - 01-10-2015, 12:32 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (11)

I created a USB drive copy of linux-lite-1.0.0-beta2-nonpae.iso and successfully booted from it on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop. It was able to detect and connect to my WiFi. I installed it to the hard disk and booted from the disk and was able to detect and connect to WiFi. I upgraded using the option in the standard menu, and selected the default options when given a choice - that is, keep locally modified config rather than overwrite with maintainer's new version. When I rebooted, wicd could not detect any networks. I repeated the whole process, with the same result.

I have attached a txt version of the hardcopy report for the machine; the Loaded Modules section includes

b43 Broadcom B43 wireless driver

and the PCI Cards section included

Network controller Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11a/b/g (rev 03)

I can if necessary connect the laptop to the router with ethernet cable.

Many thanks to anyone who can help

Richard

[SOLVED] Nokia PC Suite but for Ubuntu
Posted by: Alex - 01-10-2015, 03:22 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

I have a Nokia mobile and have not been able to download the pics in it since changing to LL. So to day i searched for a Linux alternative to the Win PC suite and came up with this link:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/nokuntu/...p_redirect

After downloading i get this error message:

from the comments i thought that I might need nautilus, so I downloaded it from the synaptic, even restarted my computer (just in case).

But the error message was the same.Looking at the reviews it seems that mst people are using it with some success...any ideas what i am doing wrong?

Thanks  Smile
