  apt vs. apt-get
Posted by: Mike - 05-17-2015, 12:28 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (1)

I'm not sure if everyone knows this or not, but I recently learned that [tt]apt[/tt] can do just about everything that [tt]apt-get[/tt] can do and with a bit more style.

Quote:Basic commands:
list - list packages based on package names
search - search in package descriptions
show - show package details

update - update list of available packages

install - install packages
remove  - remove packages

upgrade - upgrade the system by installing/upgrading packages
full-upgrade - upgrade the system by removing/installing/upgrading packages

edit-sources - edit the source information file

No more [tt]apt-cache search[/tt]...just do [tt]apt search[/tt].

I apologize if this is common knowledge but I figured I'd share it to save people some keystrokes if they're still doing it the old way.

[SOLVED] How do I adjust screen brightness on an Asus G750JS?
Posted by: m654321 - 05-16-2015, 08:09 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

The screen brightness appears to be fixed (at maximum level) on the Asus G750JS with LL2.4.  I would like to be able to adjust the brightness, e.g. dim it.
The fn key + f5 or with f6 doesn't appear to work, neither does fn + arrow keys.

Any help on this one much appreciated.

Regards
Mike

How do I move /home out of the root partition?
Posted by: m654321 - 05-16-2015, 11:47 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I installed LL2.4 as a UEFI enabled dual boot system with Windows 8.1.  I have two physical drives.
LL was installed as root with Win8.1 on SSD drive 1.  Data files are shared between both OSes,
using symlinking to SSD drive 2.

I would now like to transfer 'home' from root and install it as a separate /home partition to
unallocated space on the SSD drive 1.  The reason I want to do this is so that the configuration files
in a separate /home partition preserve my settings, rather than these being wiped out each time
I replace LL2.4 with new LL releases.

Many thanks in advance for any help with this.
Regards
Mike

linux lite doesnt shut down, nor boots, nor its detecting wifi signal
Posted by: kevin kane - 05-16-2015, 10:13 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (9)

hi,
I have installed linux lite 2.4 on my asus laptop,  installation process went fine, and i installed wifi driver from "install driver " icon, problem started when i restarted my laptop, first, it didn’t shut down, instead it showed the screen showing default picture of linux lite, and a progress at on the bottom, i waited for 30 Min for the progress  bar to complete, then also nothing happened, after waiting for another  30 min, I forced shut down my laptop, then on rebooting, again everything went all right, now, it didn’t showed wifi,  then i performed updates, now i installed the wifi driver  ( i.e.broadcom......e.t.c.  ) now again my wifi started working, now when i shut down my system again it didn’t shut down, it showed the same default picture with a progress bar, so i force my system to shut down,
this time when i rebooted , it booted and then every thing went blank, nothing happened.

i reinstalled ll again and again, every time it showed the same result,

where i went wrong ? what’s the problem ?

i downloaded is0 file from official linux lite website, using torrent client .(qb torrent)

pls help . i am really frustrated.

  Sound Control

Hi all. Was wondering if there is a way to get finer control of the volume. I think the steps are 5db each if I recall, maybe like 2.5 would be helpful. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks ahead of time.

Have a few problems installing Huawei Linux drivers on LL2.4
Posted by: Voltarin - 05-15-2015, 09:03 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

Hi Folks,
I am trying to install the Huawei 3G modem drivers for Linux on LL2.4 but have encountered a few problems:
1: If I follow the instruction doc that comes with the drivers, It tells me to go to root, and initialise or open a SuperUser command. That asks me for a password, which I have tried using my password for but it does not accept it. Is there a default SU password, and if so what is it? Alternately, How do I set up a Super User password?
2: I have a Huawei E1750 3G usb modem. Is there another way to install this from the windows software on the modem, maybe using Wine? or do I have to install the linux drivers as I found on the Net?
3: My last question has nothing to do with the above issue, but rather has to do with software availability for Linux. Where can I find a good free schematic drawing and PCB layout program for Linux, or does such a beast not exist?

Best Regards
V.

Mouse Lag in Draftsight CAD Software
Posted by: jlschwartz - 05-13-2015, 05:20 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (7)

I installed the 64bit version of LL as Draftsight no longer supports 32 bit.  However, the mouse does not move on the CAD screen properly - it seems to lag to the extent that it's unusable.  This may just be a problem with Draftsight but if there is anything I can do in Linux Lite I'd appreciate it.  I'm using a Lenovo X-130e laptop with a Logitech mouse.  Thanks.

Request. Suggested timeframe for users to respond
Posted by: galen - 05-12-2015, 01:48 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

In order to yet improve Linux Lite support services,
a reasonable time frame should be stated for how long users have to respond to dev's questions.
Considering how well documented Linux Lite has become, forum guidelines can reach this high standard.
Users are also unpaid and are here in good faith and should be given a reasonable amount of time to respond.
Let's work to make Linux Lite  a better user / supporter experience by avoiding management mistakes of other distros.
Thank you.

using apt-get remove to purge out a particular application
Posted by: GMlinux - 05-12-2015, 08:34 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Hi
Following commands supplied by Atlassian (trying to install Confluence), all of my packages have been removed. The command given was:-
sudo apt-get -purge remove apparmor apparmor-utils libapparmor-perl libapparmor1

The -purge command was give an error message by the system so I retyped without. The system did ask whether I was sure and again but as I was disabling a firewall I thought this was normal. However all of my apt-get packages were removed.

Is there an easy way for me to put back the standard packages without overwriting any particular setup created by jetbrains TeamCity which is installed and has not been backed up prior to this incident. I have used Clonezilla to do an image backup of the drive, so all will not be lost if mistakes are made.

  Canon Pixma MP495
Posted by: newtusmaximus - 05-11-2015, 06:11 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (9)

Looking to "convert" a family member to LL. However they are concerned as to whether they can get their Pixma MP495 to work ( scan & print) Also the  original "non linux" software has utilities that instructs the Pixma to clean and maintain the jets on the ink cartridges and then carry out print test routines. -  Does anyone know whether the linux package for these Canon  "all in ones" has the same maintenance options for keeping the cartridges clean etc?  Thanks.
