  mystery .gvfs folder
Posted by: Coastie - 11-14-2015, 10:56 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

An empty mystery file named .gvfs has recently showed up in my home folder.  :o

I must open it in root and it is empty. I have searched for an explanation on the internet but I am not sure what I read it means. Apparently it has something to do with the Gnome desktop. Of course, I am only using XFCE. Has it something to do with Systemback or TOR browser which I only started to use recently? The way I found it was Deja Dup say it can not back it up and still tries to copy it even after I marked it should be ignored.

What is this file? How did I get it? Is it save to delete it?  :-\

  HP Deskjet 3634 AIO
Posted by: Wirezfree - 11-14-2015, 09:24 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (9)

Hi,

My old HP 3070 started making horrible noises, so time for a new printer,
my local supermarket(Tescos) had some New HP Deskjet 3634 AIO's for £39.99 @$60
So I bought one...

Plugged it into LL Laptop, pop-up "you need HP-3060 drivers", quick google, an update of HPLIP required.
So I went to the "Latest HPLIP Download" page.

Downloaded and ran the installer to update to the latest HPLIP,
Then ran HPLIP, added new printer, up and running via WiFi in a few minutes.
You do initially connect via USB, but a WiFi option is part of the options in HPLIP.
NOTE: It could be missed, on the last install screen, small text,
It says "Now Remove USB Cable" then run "HP-Setup <ip.address>" in a terminal

Print quality is very good, and it's a bit smaller than my old HP-3070 AIO.

  [SOLVED] Trouble with GRUB re-installation
Posted by: antenor - 11-14-2015, 06:16 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (32)

Hello all,

I have Windows on sda1 and 2, Lite /, swap and /home on sda3, 5 and 6 and left some unallocated space for experimentation! I installed
there recently a few distros to see what they got in real installation because in VB, apart from being slow, I have to use scroll bars.
In order to avoid troubles with GRUB conflicts I installed each fresh installed distro's GRUB on each one's / and over them all I tried to re-install
Lite's GRUB (please, feel free to laugh!!!). Everything was going according to plan in the terminal, up to the final command "sudo update-grub"
where instead of a glorious boot menu with all the OS listed, I found myself in front of a black screen!
I boot in the live mode trying to mount Lite's / and re-install GRUB, where I see in the terminal that everything is where it supposed to be although
unmounted and as soon as I give the commands "sudo grub-install...." and "sudo update-grub" in the end, it turns back "grub-install: error:
failed to get canonical path of '/cow'
What are the proper commands to fix this and what did I do wrong?

Thank you in advance!  Smile

Xbox 360 WIRELESS Controller Working LL 2.6
Posted by: technomancer - 11-14-2015, 01:37 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (2)

I have my Xbox360 wireless controller working without issue after following the instructions listed in the link below.
http://www.noobslab.com/2014/08/configur...-your.html

Here are the instructions if you don't want to link->

Terminal Commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rael-gc/ubuntu-xboxdrv
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-xboxdrv
sudo service xboxdrv restart

USE this to configure- jstest-gtk     ---OR see below !

I had my wireless receiver connected as i did the above commands and it worked immediately.
It was the last one in the list for me, 4th. I had to remap some buttons.
<>I will update this post with mappings that worked for me.

How to create Joystick settings desktop shortcut
Here is how to create a desktop shortcut to the settings for the joystick-
1. Right click the desktop and a menu pops up.
2.Move mouse pointer to- create launcher and left click on it.
3.In the name feild put- joystick config
4.In the command feild put-  xterm jstest-gtk
5.Then left click- create button
* A dialog will appear asking what you want to do with it. Click --- make executable
* After you change mapping etc, be sure to save profiles to make it persistent.

If you want an icon for it that looks approriate just do this->
1.Left click on the icon
2.Left click-  properties
3.A window opens, the picture of the icon is available to Left click on. Click on that.
4.In the "select icon from" drop down menu select "Device Icons"
5.Scroll down to "input-gaming-symbolic" it looks like a game controller.
6.Click on "OK", window goes away then click "close"
Done

I hope this helps everyone playing games or using Steam with a Xbox360 wireless controller that came from Windoze.

Linux lite on Intel NUC for wol function
Posted by: litljohnny - 11-13-2015, 06:08 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hi,

I'm completely new to Linux although 20 years ago I worked few years on Unix x86.

I want to do a simple thing, wake up my computer from Internet using an Intel NUC (fanless  DE3815TYKH0E)  which is always on and on which I'll install Linux Lite. Then from the Linux Lite NUC I want to send WOL magic packets to a chosen PC on my home network knowing its MAC and/or IP address.

That is, I need:
- to install Linux Lite on Intel NUC
I'll do that following the guides
I'll have 4GB max of storage. I think it's enough
What's the minimum RAM requirement ?

- to have a software sending magic packets to specific MAC/IP addresses
Does such app exist on Linux Lite ?
Does any Linux distribution "wol" command work on Linux Lite ?
How should I do to launch the "wol" command ?

- to Remote Login (throughout) Internet to the Linux Lite in order to launch the wol command
I know how to open my router port.
What type of application should I use to launch the command (Remote Login, rsh, ...) ?  any other way to invoke the wol command with or without loging to the Linux Lite system ?

Please Note that sending magic packets (that is invoking wol command) is all I want to do with this NUC. I'm not using (at least for now) Linux Lite for any other thing. I'm choosing Linux Lite to install on the NUC's 4GB memory included in its motherboard without buying any more memory. Yet I have to add some RAM.

What is the minimum required RAM for Linux Lite in order to just send magic packets ?

Thanks very much

Would it be possible to add an extra field to include whether the LL version being used is 32 or 64 bit?
