  Missing Left Bracket
Posted by: pauloz - 01-26-2016, 03:08 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Hello.

I'm noticing when I want to type a left bracket i.e. SHIFT 9 on my keyboard, it does not display, no matter what program I'm using. I use this quite often so it's rather annoying. It was working previously when I had Linux Mint Cinnamon installed on my Asus Zenbook UX-21 for a few weeks. I had other issues with Cinnamon so decided to ditch and install LL. Everything is fine except for this little problem. Given it was working previously using Cinnamon, I don't think it's a hardware problem. Can anybody help please?

Thanks
Paul

  Partition Help query

Following the instructions for mounting a NTFS partition
[/size]
[/size]

Code:
linuxlite@linuxlite-Advent-4211:~$ sudo leafpad /etc/fstab
sudo password for linuxlite:

(leafpad:10484): IBUS-WARNING **: The owner of /home/linuxlite/.config/ibus/bus is not root!

looking it up on the Web > Ask Ubuntu

Quote:
[color=rgb(17, 17, 17)]You should always use gksudo instead of sudo to launch graphical applications otherwise the environmental variables aren't set up correctly.[/color]

Will this prevent me successfully adding
Code:
UUID=01CF855BB41CD3E0 /home/linuxlite/ntfsfiles ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

to the fstab instructions . I do not get any reports when I "Save & Quit " Leafpad

Must be OK just checked and my Data Partition files have appeared in the ntfsfiles folder

Does the Manual need changing  to avoid confusion ?  Even a Note to say to disregard the **IBUS-WARNING** would allay doubts if the instructions cannot be modified

Playing Youtube videos on my limited-resource notebook
Posted by: n1ksn - 01-24-2016, 11:56 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (5)

Greetings, all.  My Gateway LT40 notebook computer runs a dual boot with LL and AntiX's MX-15.  (LL is my preferred distribution, but I like to play around with alternatives.)  Playing Youtube videos has been a challenge on this little machine.

To avoid browser issues, I installed SMTube in both distros, with VLC being the player it calls.  Well, with this setup LL did OK playing the videos at about 80-90% CPU usage.  But MX-15 ran with 100% CPU usage and usually the image froze while the sound played.

After some bumbling around I went to the SMTube settings menu and found that it could use several different players.  I installed and tried SMPlayer with better results than VLC, but with the video lagging the audio by about 1 second in MX-15.

Then I tried mplayer, which is a command line program.  Bingo!  With mplayer the backend to SMTube, Youtube videos played just fine in both distros.  LL still uses less CPU than MX-15, but they are both way down from using VLC or SMPlayer.  I did have to reduce the desired resolution to 360 to get the full video frame, but I blame my 1240 x 600 display for that.  Also, there are fewer controls while watching the video, but this doesn't bother me.

In retrospect this all makes sense, because as a command line program I'd expect mplayer to use fewer resources.  But it took me a while to figure this out.  I thought I'd pass my experiences along to the LL forum in case this would help someone else.  Linux Lite could actually play the videos without changes, but by using the SMTube and mplayer combination the CPU usage is down to something like 10-15%, a big jump downward, and I like that.  If I'm playing a music video just to listen, I can minimize the video window and do other things at the same time.

Cheers,
Andy N1KSN

Posted by: thera - 01-24-2016, 09:41 PM - Forum: Sound - No Replies

It works great in audacity.
i want to use it to search on chromium like "Ok Google"
i read where it was disabled in 1 form of chromium as a spyware culprit.
i can dial out in chromium gmail calls / hangouts, but no one can hear me though I can hear who I call.  i can call out in both chromium and firefox.  Both call out and i can hear them, but with no microphone for them to hear me.

I really want the gmail phone function.  how do i do this?

  Text problem with Posts
Posted by: Colin23erk - 01-24-2016, 08:45 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

Is it possible to stop the Font size in Posts changing in size when a correction is made - I deleted a word in the middle of a sentence and the rest of the sentence text was reduced to minimum size .

It also happens with Cut and paste within the same document .

I have been told to use "Paste as plain Text" when pasting from other sources and thought this could be made the only Paste option .

This should not happen  (deleted a mistake > got new font  size ) [size=78%]effect  deleting [/size][/size](changed text size ) within a line Colin [size=78%]

To help view popular Topics with a lot of Posts is it possible to have the following options  to save wading through lots of old posts

1) have the posts with the latest at the top of the list or the option to view " original post " or " latest" first

2) have the go to page dialogue  at the top of each page rather than having to scroll through a page of posts

3) have an "In" Topic search .
If I have Googled a problem etc  and been linked to a Topic I an not directed to the actual post but to the first post . I then have to read though lots of irrelevant posts to find what I want even though the relevant post is quoted in the search results. With big posts it is time consuming and frustrating
.When the post is "Solved" it would be helpfull to go directly to the Solution

Hi everyone,

Longtime Linux user but new here. I tend to be a Debian WM user and it's been a little while since using a DE, certainly didn't think I'd enjoy a system using Xfce but must say, I'm quite impressed with Linux Lite and find it a very responsive, well organized, fast and surprisingly easy to customize distribution.

I'd like to thank the dev(s) and all involved for all your hard work!

Smile
