  Hello LL Community!
Posted by: Boris Lon?ari? - 10-20-2019, 04:27 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

Just dropping by to say hi and to ask this question: where can I post a topic about a hardware problem I'm facing in Linux Lite?

I hope you are all well and enjoying your day to at least some degree. I'll confess that apart from this problem that I currently have, I wouldn't have signed up for this forum, because I'm usually not a forum type of guy. However, since I'm determined to learn how to use Linux, and I opted out for Linux Lite, perhaps I'll become quite an active member in time that's ahead of us. It's good to be knowledgeable, and I believe that this community already has certain amount of knowledge which has generously been made available to newcomers such as myself.

So, thank you all for being here, for helping each other and for keeping this community alive! Smile

  BioPunk [genre]
Posted by: MS - 10-20-2019, 08:52 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (3)

Cyberpunk and Steampunk are probably the two best known "X-punk" genres, in the world of creative fiction. To be fair, I do not get their "essence" as much, I do not know what are they perhaps truly about, but what I do know, is that they speak of certain civilizational collision, a transition time, in which neither the part of global influence is ready yet for the encounter. They also both speak of how the old and the new, unwilling to change, negotiate with one another, but most importantly, what is the sociological outcome of their mutual struggle.

What I wanted to propose, is a genre of analogous kind, called "Biopunk". What could be new about Biopunk, is that it tells about a civilization, which has discovered a new breed of alien species, being the subject of intense study. The aliens themselves, though, to definitive majority of population, are unknown, a mystery. Government tries to keep the study as restricted in access and secret as possible, but one thing is known for certain - this is the transition time, where the old humanity meets the new humanity. What I mean by that, is humans start to incorporate an alien "DNA" - in lack of better term - to their body structure, allowing for rapid changes and extended capabilities, unobserved thusfar in the mankind. The alien "strain" is obtained illegally, to be understood, thus the formation of wide, chaotic underground movement.

Emergent problems address typical "X-punk" patterns, such as, the questions of self-control, the questions of limits, the questions of being human, finally the questions of the future of human race. In the Cyberpunk genre, to compare, having too much of technological implants had been taken, one looses humanity and becomes more like a Terminator kind of cyborg. In the Biopunk, in turn, incorporating too much of the dynamically - infectiously, one could say - working alien strain into oneself, strengthens the connection with an alien mind pattern within oneself, further to be known as the overmind, which eventually takes charge of the newly formed post-human minions.

It could later on be revealed that the human government wages war on the alien species - which, false to prior claims, is not a study on dormant or trace subjects, but actually, is a full fledged race for survival - with the Biopunk behaviours affecting the human population, being one of the alien strategies to simply win the war.

  Hello

I'm an XP Pro user looking to find an easy to use lightweight distro to run as a LiveCD in RAM. I tried various versions of Puppy, but trying to get it to connect to the internet was too irritating. I'm looking for something similar, but it absolutely must meet three requirements:

1. It must connect to the internet automatically like MX Linux does. I most definitely will not be fooling with any internet connection setup, like the popup in Puppy Linux.

2. It must be ready to play videos at YouTube, Putlockers, or similar sites out of the box, without me having to fuss with it...and the sound must not be in messed up (like in slow motion).

3. No CLI requirement. Between Dyslexia and ADD, there is not much that grinds on my nerves faster than CLI.

My PC is used Dell OptiPlex 755, which I had a local computer shop check for malware, then modify to my specs. The 4GB cheap RAM was ditched, and replaced with 8GB brand-name. The CD-ROM was replaced by a DVD burner. The spare 5.25 bay was given over to a mobile-rack and bare hard disk for secondary HDD (MX Linux will eventually be installed there). I'm using a wired-only VDSL setup, meaning zero wi-fi/bluetooth junk.

I have never tried Linux Lite, so I wanted to ask here if this distro can meet my three requirements. If not, maybe someone can recommend a distro that can.

  Computer crash mystery
Posted by: Searchernow - 10-19-2019, 07:38 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

I don't know if there is any connection between these events on another LL 4.6 i5 computer, which had been working fine for a long time.

1:  Using Vivaldi browser I used DistroTest.net to look at a distro, a very slow process. I then left that site.

2:  within the next 30 mins or so the computer became slow, slower, then almost stopped/froze as I tried to re-start. A partly obscured message window appeared, and I'll give the left hand end of the message - sorry, it may seem pointless, but someone may recognize it!?

RECEIVE

broken.

after a few mins more the re-start did take place and things seemed to work ok.
I did run Home folder scan on ClamTK, no threats found.

3: The scary part! shortly after 2 began my smartphone, whose wifi hotspot I was using (never a problem before), also froze, black screen, and took a long time pressing the start button for it to respond and re-boot.
What a coincidence, 2 devices crashing! (The only thing that occurs, other than a malware attack, is maybe when I lifted the phone I pressed the start button, and ....? But that doesn't do any harm now...)

4: not long after re-boot PC started to not respond to clicking, for example Menu on panel, except for a split-second flash of a window. The ClamTK did open, but actions within it just same brief window flashes.

I have checked the Win7 partition on that pc, working fine.

I've re-booted into LL and it looks like it's working fine for now. ClamTK of System files ok.

I've no idea if this is a software issue or an attack.

When I try to update Linux Light I always get the error message below. I have used the install button on the start linux light screen and I tried it also with "apt-get update".
The update procedure worked for quite a while without problems. I have recently installed gimp and the opera browser. May be the problem is caused by these newly installed programs.
Suggestions how to solve the problems appreciated...

Conky Widget Update Status Not Updating
Posted by: Tyrannocaster - 10-16-2019, 03:27 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

Linux Lite 4.0, been running it for almost a year now. Regular updates about once a week. Latest one was this morning, but the Conky status widget is not showing the update, even after a reboot. I kind of like having the reminder, so I'd like to get it working again. Where should I start? I looked at the forum and found advice to clean packages, but that didn't help. Others have had a similar problem, but the posts are old, with older operating systems.

Any idea where I should look?

Hello,

I currently have Ubuntu loaded on a desktop with modest resources (dont want to spend alot of money).
I do have a memory upgrade on the way ..

Am considering a "liter" version... I have to ask.

What makes Linux lite, well, lite compared to lets say a Ubunto LTS distro ?

thanks
iosman
