  Linux Lite part II
Posted by: Patomas - 04-16-2020, 06:53 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

This is Patomas, I've been registered a little bit but I had been gone for months. As others, COVID-19 had me locked down at home so I decided to roll up my sleeve and take it upon myself installing Linux Lite. I did extensive research before deciding to choose this distro. What I found is that it's the right combination of lightweight and functionality that I needed along with compatibility and user friendliness (if that is a word). My first attempt burst into flames and I couldn't really make it work. I was up against a very locked down corporate Windows box. In the end I was able to install Fedora alongside Windows 10 but that's not what I wanted. I decided to give new life to my 10-year old Sony Vaio laptop. It has Windows 7 and no UEFI (that was part of the problem the first time around). I went through the installation and to my surprise it worked the first time around! What I have to say about Linux Lite is that makes my old laptop perform as fast as my newer (4-year old) corporate Lenovo, sometimes faster (McAfee can slow down the faster computers). So far I a happy as a clam and working away. There are things that are going to be a challenge (Citrix anyone) but others work right out of the box. That's all, I hope everyone is safe and thank you for the forum.

Removed extra kernels and now photo viewing progra are not operating correctly.
Posted by: Rapidrob - 04-13-2020, 07:03 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I may have done a dumb thing. I backed my master hard drive and got a pop-up window saying that there were two kernels of data taking up a large amount of hard drive space, and I should remove them.
I did. Now when I try to open up my photo's the computer hangs for a very long time before it will allows me to view a photo or select the next one in line.
Is there a way to do a 'system restore" in linux lite?

LL4.8 takes a lot to boot
Posted by: SpAiK - 04-13-2020, 08:04 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Hi, I recently installed LL 4.8 on an old HP Compaq 6710b laptop. It installed perfectly fine and I'm currently writing this post from there, so it works fine and fast once logged in. But every time I boot (no dual boot, LL only) it takes a lot of time to reach to desktop. Similarly when I shut down, it takes some time to do it, more than it should.
So I've taken a look to dmesg and have found that there is some problem than repeats over boot time (and also at shutdown) and slows things down a lot:

Quote:q-6710b-GB889ET-ABE kernel: [  13.280068] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_flip_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:34:pipe A] flip_done timed out

  Wine install screw up
Posted by: ryan.mccauslin - 04-13-2020, 03:53 AM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

So I got Lite 4.8 running (thanks for the help from a previous post). Now I screwed up Wine quite badly.

Thought I could upgrade to the latest wine-stable (5.0) and somehow ended up with a version mistmatch 547/597. I did everything, updates, repository adds, etc from the command line.

Basically just want Directx 11 to work. Now I'm not sure what I did, or how to fix it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  UEFI Install problems
Posted by: ohjrson - 04-13-2020, 03:32 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (14)

So..... I tried installing the UEFI build 4.2 for LL on my UEFI Acer laptop. E5-722-49HD. The live usb that I made with uNetbootin seemed to work fine. It was a little slow on boot but everything booted up into the live environment. I installed on to the laptop from there and did not receive any errors. When I rebooted though, it only boots into Win 10. Yes I installed LL 4.2 along side win 10. I went back into the live environment and can see the area allocated for LL. But I can't seem to get it to load. I went into setup and UEFI is enabled along with secure boot. However I cannot go into the secure boot and turn if off. What am I or did I do wrong? Any thought would be great, Thank you.

Linux Lite 4.8 no se termina de apagar
Posted by: RjveraL - 04-12-2020, 06:06 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

I have a desktop pc that installs Linux Lite 4.8, the board is Bios, so the disk format also leaves it in MBR, even though I tried it in GPT, but it gives the same error. Previously, I had windows installed, but I wanted to upgrade to Linux Lite due to improved performance.
Anyway, from the first start it does not really turn off the computer, it only closes the operating system.
At first I thought that there was an error in the installation and I installed everything again. But it gave me the same error.
I tried various possible solutions, change ACPI settings, grub, update the motherboard bios (Bios by Intel Board DG33BU), install in GPT, update and tried different linux kernel, but none of the solution.
Someone has happened to you, as you have solved it.
What other tests can I do.
Attached photo of the error ...
From already thank you very much

How to clone current LL HD to a new disk?
Posted by: johnnyboy5000 - 04-11-2020, 04:32 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (2)

My current LL 4.8 system is on a 64GB ssd and I wanted to copy it to a bigger 128 ssd that I have.  I already booted from a USB drive and use gparted to copy the partition of the 64GB disk to the 128GB disk.  In the bios I made the 128GB the startup disk.  When rebooting the computer would not boot. So I put the start up disk back to the 64GB disk and when the computer booted again, it booted from the 128GB disk. I unplugged the sata cable from the 128GB disk and the computer booted from the 64GB, but now there is a grub menu at startup.

I'm thinking I'll boot from the usb drive again with only the 128GB drive connected, use gparted to erase that partition.  I'll do some research to remove the grub menu from the startup of the 64GB drive and I'll be back where I started.

So...  what's the best way to clone your LL startup disk to a new bigger disk?

Thanks
