  Python dist-packages problem? -- null distro/platform name
Posted by: HiTechHiTouch - 02-18-2021, 06:01 AM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

In attempting to install my HP P1606dn printer, I learned that an additional piece of code beyond the HPLIP 3.20.11 provided materials is required.  To install this support module, HP provides HPLIP-3.20.11-plugin.run, a python script.  This script uses platform.dist()[0] to obtain the name of the distribution.  The error message is "AttributeError: module 'platform' has no attribute 'dist'".

The function is in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages (1.4.0), and "pip install distro" reports "Requirement already satisfied: distro in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages (1.4.0)"

Code:
+ hp-plugin

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver 3.20.11)
Plugin Download and Install Utility ver 2.1

qt5ct: using qt5ct plugin
Checking for network connection...
Downloading plugin from:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/hplip/base/password.py", line 85, in get_distro_name
    os_name = platfrom.dist()[0]
AttributeError: module 'platfrom' has no attribute 'dist'

The HP helper hp-plugin fails to install for many (non LL) distributions because the packager did not pick up the Python distro package, which is now required for Python 3.8+ because of code removal in 3.8.

So... I went down the chain to see that LL indeed had a usable dist-packages.  All appears well, i.e. the LL distribution is NOT missing the newly required dist-packages.

However, dist-packages claims to be HIGHLY system dependent, poking around in C libraries and other places to figure out what to report.  See https://pypi.org/project/distro for background.  Also https:docs.python.org/2/library/platform.html section 15.15.5

So may I politely ask if the LL packager needs to do something to have dist-packages report the distribution name?  (I assume it would be Ubuntu, 20.04.x, Focal Fossa).

LL not recognizing a specific USB stick
Posted by: Tyrannocaster - 02-18-2021, 02:06 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (4)

I have a HP 16 gig USB drive which works fine on my Windows machine, even on my DVD player, and also on my old Mac. It is formatted FAT 32. Linux Lite refuses to admit it even exists. Plug it in and nothing; it doesn't show up with any command I can find, and I've been searching for the last half hour online. Running lsblk, for example gives nothing but the other devices I have. Ditto for fdisk -l.

Anybody have any idea what might be going on with this? The Disks program can't see it, Gparted can't see it, but these other OS systems work fine with it.

  Updating Calibre
Posted by: LinuksLajt - 02-18-2021, 01:09 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

The Calibre e-book reader from supported repositories of LL 3.8 is stuck on version 2.55. Is there a reliable way of getting a newer 32-bit version? I really enjoy Calibre on my little Acer Aspire One running LinuxLite 3.8 (as opposed to a bigger laptop, not fitting into a lap). Should I run the instructions for Linux on the Calibre web site or should I add another (unknown) repository to the updates? I am not afraid of running command lines, but the numerous dependencies are off-putting. And I expect the restore points shoud guard me against disasters. NOTE: I use Calibre for open EPUB books only.

How do I change the default file manager?
Posted by: Tyrannocaster - 02-16-2021, 04:01 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I know it's possible, because I did it a few years ago when I started using LL. I can't remember how to do it and searching the form has not given me an answer, perhaps because I didn't use the right terms, but I've tried several. I wanted to try Nemo, and it works but I have to launch it separately each time. I don't even know if I would want to keep it as the default because it's so clumsy to do this way.

  Inactive taskbar
Posted by: Swamp Rat - 02-15-2021, 08:34 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I have 2 nearly identical computers, both running LL5 and with the exact same set of original and added programs. My #2 computer is mostly a backup to my #1 and doesn't even get turned on very often. Yesterday, after about a month of non-use, I fired up the #2 and did a sizable update.

Since that update, my single bottom taskbar has been unresponsive. The icons on both the far left and far right operate, but when I run a program, the center part remains blank -- no notification of anything running.

Since I often have multiple programs running simultaneously in any desktop, I can use the ALT-TAB to pull up any minimized programs, but I would prefer to be able to just click on its icon in the taskbar, as I did before yesterday's update.

I don't recall ever having to activate this feature to make it work. I assume that having the little taskbar icons show is a given. So, any help in getting my taskbar to once again be active would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Install updates from the menu icon, LL 5.0
Posted by: BlueFire - 02-15-2021, 08:16 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

I played in the last few days with suricata ids/ips and today i come across something terrible if this thing happens on any LinuxLite and not only on my end. Updating from the menu icon "install updates" seems to trigger an alert from suricata rule 2013028 emerging threats. At first i thought is a false positive but then i saw each and every time i click that update icon from the menu it triggers that alert and it send some outbound connection toward google domain ip 142.250.178 and 216.x.x.x For example the alert looks like this: "[1:2013028:5] ET POLICY curl User-Agent Outbound [**] [Classification: Attempted Information Leak] [Priority: 2] {TCP} 192.168.x.x:36200 -> 142.250.178.14:80" .To check further the problem i blocked with UFW outbound connections toward those ip ranges coresponding to google domains for port 80. The result was that when i clicked again on "install updates" i get the message your pc is not connected to the internet. Tried several times to be sure and same result. Tried to update via terminal and everything seems to work ok via terminal. I disabled firewall and clicked again now it works again of course triggering again that alert. Now the question is, is it ok to let google know when i make or not make updates? For me this is a huge privacy issue and hope that this happens only on my end so the question you guys have the same outcome when blocking google port 80? I use youtube a lot this days so my id can be easily asociated with my update schedule. Thank you in advance and hope i did not bored to death anyone with this one  :Smile

"Upgrade" Xbuntu 20.04.2 to Linux Lite 5.2
Posted by: HiTechHiTouch - 02-15-2021, 04:28 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

I like running LL on one of my machines so much that I want to update/upgrade/convert my two other Linux machines.

I particularity want the LL desktop, and I expect to loose XCFE and Gtk customization.

I want to preserve all the applications I've installed, SMB/networking, MythTV, GCC build environments, etc.

Any suggestions how to approach this?
