  Newbie unsure about update message
Posted by: Smithy - 02-20-2022, 02:29 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Hi, Newbie here, fresh install of Lite 5.8, attempting to perform the initial update and I get this info. (Immediately afterwards it gave an indication that system was up to date?).

I'm not sure if I'm up to date or not.

Many thanks, Smithy  :026:

  New Linux user trying out Linux Lite 5.8
Posted by: Smithy - 02-20-2022, 02:16 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

Hi Everyone  :wave

I'm a reasonably competent self-taught Windows user that's been interested in Linux for a while. I've tried various live distros on my wonderful Thinkpad, originally I tried Ubuntu (as the universally recommended one), but found it horribly slow. Have persisted and set myself the project to revitalize an old Dell business laptop with a lightweight distro. Tried MX, but it was so non-responsive. Then I tried AntiX as I still liked the whole Dolphin Oracle thing, but again it was too sluggish. So I decided I needed to try a much smaller Distro, and tried Porteus, Q4OS, and Lite.

I settled on Lite because, maybe because I come from Windows, I liked the easy availability of the firewall, and otherwise it's attractive enough and responsive enough for my needs. While I realize it's not that much smaller than the others, it is much more responsive on this machine.

My main usage is studying to online video tutorials. Have got minimal idea around using the command line, but have certainly learnt a lot through trying out the various live distros.

  Wifi & LAN connected by no internet (after cleaning fan). Bios clock related?
Posted by: jam_27 - 02-19-2022, 01:13 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (2)

Hi,
I have got Linux 3.8 32 bit on my Vaio VGN UX1XN.
I decided to open the unit and clean the fan.
I put the machine back together after a week and fired up the OS at which point I noticed that I there was no internet connection even though the wifi is showing connected.
Upon checking the bios and the time was off so I corrected the time and restarted the machine still with with no internet (wifi still showing connected).
I then checked with a live distro and wifi and internet worked.
I have also checked with direct LAN connection. LAN gets connected but I cannot connect to internet.

So something appears to has gone wrong in the installed OS (perhaps related to the bios clock) and I would appreciate some diagnostic guidelines to fix the issue.

Thanks,
(I am not an experienced Linus user so please be gentle on me Big Grin)

I have installed GreenWithEnvy.

I am unable to set coolbits8

I have tried.

sudo update-grub
sudo nvidia-xconfig -a --cool-bits=28 --allow-empty-initial-configuration

I have also tried editing xorg.conf

But it does not work.

Please advise.

  ~/local/share/applications/exo-file-manager.desktop wrong application in RC 6.0
Posted by: dihonomo - 02-18-2022, 03:05 PM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (1)

As the title says, the file (also in /etc/skel) contains the following:

Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Exec=/usr/bin/lite-updates
Icon=liteupdates
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Categories=Utility;X-XFCE;X-Xfce-Toplevel;
OnlyShowIn=XFCE;
X-XFCE-MimeType=inode/directory;x-scheme-handler/trash;
Name=Install Updates
Comment=Get the latest updates for your computer

This leads to unexpected behavior when a program has a "Open Folder" function. I have renamed this file to lite-updates.desktop; a exo-file-manager.desktop file is already in /usr/share/applications

  Dual Boot Installation Fatal Error "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/nvme0n1p8"
Posted by: Alan_Wilts - 02-16-2022, 11:13 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - No Replies

Hi. I'm using dual boot for the first time. It's linked to trying out options on a new PC.

The boot mode is CSM as option 1 is to continue with Win 7. That's on a spinning hard disk, currently disconnected.

Option 2 is Win 10 and I've installed that on a 500GB nvme SSD as GPT

Option 3 is LL. I've been using that in a VM and on a laptop to build up experience and confidence.

When installing LL I added partitions /root, /home and swap on the SSD. I first got an error that "No "Reserved BIOS boot area"  so I added a 1MB grub partition. I then got the error: "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/nvme0n1p8"

Image 1 is the LL partition set up during installation

[Image: Install-Partitoning-lr.jpg]

image 2 is the partition table seen under Win 10 using Macrium Reflect backup utility.

[Image: Partitions-Annotated.jpg]
I would like some help please on how to proceed.

Thanks for reading
Alan

  Windows Boot Loader
Posted by: XappA - 02-16-2022, 03:56 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Hi,

Im new to Linux and I used Linux lite as for its lightweight and have all what I need as a beginner. The only problem I have is that when the system updated, it messed up my windows bootloader and I cannot boot in Windows Anymore.

Is there are way to restore my windows bootloader? I tried to all the steps I can find on the internet but It does not seem to work.

Is there a step by step guide specifiic to Linux lite on accomplishing this.

Thanks in advance

  enable auto login doesnt work reply 2
Posted by: stevef - 02-16-2022, 09:58 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Enabling auto login using the GUI method I used changed the file

/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

and put my user name on the line 'autologin-user='

Errors in this file if manually edited can cause lock out.

Posted by: stevef - 02-16-2022, 09:25 AM - Forum: Other - No Replies

Sorry about starting a new thread - the option to reply appears to not be working for me.

I don't use auto-login but as an experiment, I tried

Control Panel
Lite Auto Login

Clicked 'Enable Auto Logoin'
Entered password
Accepted the disclaimer

Re-booted and was auto-logged in

Disabled auto login using the same path

  Enable Auto Login doesn't work
Posted by: george79 - 02-16-2022, 09:06 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I've been trying to enable auto login for hours and it doesn't seem to work.
I perform all steps needed to enable auto login by clicking SYSTEM=>LOGIN SETTINGS=>ENABLE AUTO LOGIN and I get the positive confirmation at the end.
After restart I can see the login screen again. I tried to reinstall lightdm packgace but it didn't help.
Is there a place - the config file - where I can set this manually? How to check if the ENABLE AUTO LOGIN option is realy on or off?

Linux Lite 3.8
