hi
trying to start synaptic produces the following text and will not run also apt-get will not execute.
E: Clearsigned file '/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_focal_InRelease' contains unsigned lines.
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.help if possible please
I was a little bit hasty in asking for help. Booted into kernel ...105 instead of kernel...107. Then ran update-initramfs and update-grub. Rebooted into kernel ...107 and all seems to work now.john

!!SALUD!!

Identical computers - different results

I have two completely identical desktop computers (same make, same model, same CPU, same amount of RAM, same hard drives), both running LL5. They do have different login passwords. The ONLY other differences are the keyboards and the sound systems, neither of which should affect any operation, and the amount of usage of each: What I'll call the #1 gets used more often than #2, which I mostly use as a total backup of files, and as an alternate if something goes wrong with the #1.
The md5sum of the download came up perfect. I "burned" the ISO to a DVD, which I let check every file before loading the OS. All came up correct. I used that DVD to load LL onto both computers on the same day. One would think that everything would work identically on them, but there are some differences that I don't understand.
A) The #2 gets to the login screen in about 2/3 of the time that #1 takes.
B) The #2 has the big yellow feather appear on and off during booting. The #1 never shows the feather.
C) In the annoying backgammon game, gnubg, #1 has that come up 9/10 of the time in less than full screen. On #2, it always comes up full screen.
D) The screen saver operates perfectly on # 1 - blackout screen. #2 often "forgets" that the screen saver is activated, although it shows up activated in Settings, and the monitor only goes to a dark gray, not black.
E) When updates are available, #1 usually has the notice show up within a few minutes, but #2 will take much longer for the notice to appear.
Now, none of this makes me want to abandon LL. It has been rock solid, in general, from day one. I just don't understand why anything is different on the two computers. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

“Update Manager” for LL3.8

Back in 2019 I started using Ralphy’s Update Manager which allowed me to selectively apply safer updates rather than everything. This started out after I did a full update on one of the study laptops which then lead to some performance issues/problems.
With this Update Manager the updates are labelled from 1 to 5 (1 being the safest and 5 being the opposite). I could check all the boxes from 1-3 leaving 4 and 5 unchecked and then “apply” the changes.
Because at least 60-70% of my study laptops are 32-bit I continue to run LL 3.8 on them, however twice now on two different laptops when I go to refresh the updates in update manager it is unable to do so. Next time this happens I will take a picture, but currently I don’t have the message that pops up.
So my questions are:
1) does Update Manager still work?
2) if I’m unable to get it working, how much of a risk is it to do a full, usual update for these laptops? Currently without updating they are working just fine for the students and some have not been updated in 2 years because of COVID resulting in me being unable to return to South Africa until just now. As I will be leaving end of April and not returning until end of October I’m a bit hesitant to do a “full update”, run into major issues and then have those laptops out-of-commision!
Opinions anyone?

Screen aspect on HP Ultrabook running LL 5.0

Unfortunately I don’t have a photo to post as I’ve already placed this laptop with a student, however I’m hoping someone has an answer such that I can tweak this later.
On the desktop when I hover over the various items in the panel the description of the icon pops up, however at least half of the text box is below the edge of the screen preventing the ability to see and read what it is. It seems to be only this laptop where this is occurring so far. Most of the other laptops running this version show the text description above the icon when hovering over them…
I was hoping in the least there was a setting that would allow me to choose where that text box popped up (above the icon preferably).
My thoughts are that something is a bit “off” in the screen aspect ratio or that maybe there is an area in “panel” where I can fine tune this, however so far I’ve not found anything.
Any advice or ideas?

Difficult to Grab Window Edge

Quote:Hi!
My first post here. :-)
I have huge difficulty grabbing the window's edge with the mouse cursor, when I want to resize it. The margin for this is very narrow. In other distros (or OS) there is no problem with that.
Is there any way to change it?
Thanks!

Apologies for starting a new thread. If a thread subject contains some punctuation it cannot be opened properly due to a temporary issue on the forum.
Your difficulty could be related to the desktop theme you are using. Different themes have different window frame width. The LL default is Adapta which is quite narrow.
Go to Menu -> Settings - Window Manager
Under the 'style' tab make a note of your current theme, then select others in turn. This should dynamically alter the desktop so if you have a sample window open on the desktop you can see if the frame width becomes easier to select. 'Default-xhdpi' might be one to try. If you can't find an installed theme to suit, you can import others.
See Help Manual - Customize - Themes and Icon Sets
